Leviton zWave controller & Intermatic switches/dimmers

i just got my leviton handheld remote ( & RZCOP). But alas, I can't get the leviton to add any of my intermatic switches or dimmers to the network. I didn't delete them from the intermatic handheld controller first, but i shouldn't have to do that.

any suggestions? I'm seriously starting to hate this zWave "interoperability" thing...

IVB,

I'm fairly certain that you have to exclude a node from the network before adding it to another one. Use the Leviton Handheld remote to exclude them, then use it to include them all. (Yea, this seems to work, even if you don't use the Primary Controller that you included them with, at least it has worked for the stuff I tried it on, not sure about intermatic).

If a device is part of another network it must be removed before it can be added to another one. This is part of the security in the z-wave protocol. You can use any controller to remove the device. it doesn't have to be a controller from the original network. Alternatively, you can do a factory reset on the device to make sure it is not part of another network.

okay, that was it, thanks.

Also turns out that 7 of my 22 devices aren't getting picked up, most have "failed to include check device instructions", some just don't say anything. I wonder if those are dead devices, which is why my zWave network has suddenly gone to crap.

Does the Zwave controller have any sort of 'test' or signal strength indicator? Haven't looked at Zwave but I know that Jetstream software has a signal test and I think something like that would help you confirm the health of your switches.

The Intermatic one doesn't. I'm still figuring out how to use the Leviton one, maybe it does.

On an upside, I contacted Intermatic support via their web form, and it seems really straightforward to get a warranty repair. Their email was a little cryptic, it insinuated that they don't even want me to return mine, but perhaps i'm wrong there. I'm faxing in the request now, i'll update y'all with what I think.

Let me know if you can add the intermatic switches into Leviton scenes. Won't work here.

1. intermatic has left the z-wave alliance so don't look for much support from them anymore. i know they are the cheapest and look the most normal but they are pretty much done with z-wave

2. the homesettings line does NOT support associations if i remember correctly so they probably will not add into a scene in the classic sense. a workaround would be a software solution.

any failure to include a node directly into a master remote is at the device level not the network. usually the exclude/re-include works. i have tested all kinds of devices from different manufacturers with the leviton remote and have not had an issue as of yet including the homesettings line. i have had some flake out on me but those are issues with the device not the inclusion into a network.

homeseer and controlthink both have network tools, i think there are trial demos also but am not sure. you have to double check with them on that one.

personally i have noticed significant drops in network availability even if just one node drops. i know it's not supposed to be this way but if the node was a central node with many connections instead of a fringe device this can happen, especially on smaller networks where this node is more crucial. typically when making a z-wave network you want to try to work from the inside out when adding nodes. kind of like rings around a planet.

Yes the Leviton does have various utilities to test the strength of the network and the routes it is located under system setup>advanced>utilities>Tests You can test the routes to ensure they have a path and can test strength between any two devices. However, I think the testing utilities only work for the Leviton RF+ devices so I am not sure you will be able to use these test utilities to test the intermatic equipment but you could try. I have an all vizia rf+ network and it works great so far and I have it interfaced with the Elk via RZCOP which so far seems pretty stable.
