M1G and Radio RA2

I'm a total noob and trying to plan a replacement security system with some automation functions. My   question is about the interface of the two systems. So, I know about the M1SXLU, but the Radio RA2 also has an Ethernet connection. So, can the M1 control the Radio RA2 system via the Ethernet connection (with the Ethernet module, of course) or do I really need the M1SXLU? I can't find anything about this here or on the Elk site. Thanks for the help.

In short yes, you do need the expander. You may be able to achieve basic control using the Ethernet expander and sending ASCII strings, but only using the elk radiora2 module can you get true 2 way integration. The product manual is here: http://www.smarthome.com/manuals/12829.pdf

Thank you. For a follow up question, do you know if the Lutron controller can be controlled through the serial port, from the M1, and through the Ethernet, by e.g. the android app, at the same time? Well, not really simultaneously, but would both be available - I.e. connecting one doesn't preclude the other?

Yes, the main repeater will accept commands via RS-232 and will support several IP clients (I forget how many) at the same time. Each IP client needs a user name and password in the RA2 main repeater.
