M1XEP problem

I can't get it to connect to my M1. The board LED is on steady.

I also can't see it on my network. The green LED is flashing at what looks to be random spacing and very far apart. The yellow LED does not flash at all. I also can't see the mac address when logged in to my router.

Can I assume that my card is not functioning?

Your card is not functioning, but it's because you have not configured it with an appropriate IP address. Use the procedure in the instructions to enable DHCP and it should at least show at the router.

I am confused. I can't communicate with it at all through the M1 or through the ethernet port. Did I miss an instruction somewhere? I thought you had to configure it through the M1

Refer to the instructions on the bottom of page 25 in the ELK M1XEP Installation Manual. Make sure your M1XEP is in the DHCP mode.

If you haven't already done so, you need to go through the enrollment procedure, but that won't stop the M1XEP from appearing on the Ethernet network.

I can't figure out how to enroll it. I had no trouble with the M1XSP on the 485 bus. I just can't get the system to recognize the XEP on the 232 port.
Either way my network doesn't see a mac address anyway.


Guess I'll have to send it back for service.

Sending it for service is a waste of money for you and time for ELK! FedEx will be the only one to benefit.

Don't give up so easily. You enroll from a keypad the same as you did with the M1XSP. How are you determining that the M1 does not recognize the M1XEP on the RS-232 port? With the M1XEP, you won't see the result of the enrollment process until you have ELK RP connected.

Did you get the M1XEP into the DHCP mode?

Easily? I've been trying to sort this out all day. haha
To clarify, I am trying to enroll it using the keypad. When finished the keypad says two devices are enrolled, the M1XSP and the Keypad. That's it. The XEP doesn't show up in the list, therefore I can't change any settings on it. Am I correct?

Does ELK not do repairs on these?

I think it is in DHCP mode. I jumped it and it did the steady light, then steady single flashes. This should be the correct mode, right?

Still no yellow LED and the board LED is not flashing either.

Yes that's what I saw steady, 5 flashes, then steady singles.

Launched ELK RP, find....nothing.
Can't see it with the router either.

Any other thoughts? I do appreciate the help as this problem is stopping me from mounting the board in the cabinet.

Lot's of other thoughts!!

1) Try a different cable between the M1XEP and the router.
2) If you are using MAC address filtering, turn it off. Maybe temporarily turn off the security all together.
3) Try a different port on the router.
4) Make sure the DHCP server on the router is configured properly and running.

If you have an Ethernet crossover cable, we can try bypassing the router.

VERY IMPORTANT! If the M1XEP does not get an IP address assignment within one minute, it will revert to a static IP address. This means that you should cycle power on the M1XEP every time you make one of this type of change.

Or just forget DHCP, set a secondary network address on one of your PC's to 192.168.0.x and try to PING 192.168.0.251. If that works then go into ElkRP and set the IP to 192.168.0.251 and try to connect. Then change it to something on your real network once you are in...

Swapped cables
MAC filtering is off
Switched ports(I just noticed there is no light on the router on the port the XEP is connected to)
DHCP is working. I swapped two other devices and their addresses changed on the router.

I have a crossover cable handy.

I also used Advanced IP scanner to find it with no success. I am bothered by the fact that no lights are showing when I plug this unit into a port on the router.

One last try. Connect the M1XEP directly to the PC using the crossover cable. Cycle power on the M1XEP. Wait 10 minutes. Then follow wuench's suggestion in Post #13. Some versions of Windows use the term "alternate" instead of "secondary".
