More LED bulb options

New year equals new deals on LED lights? Hopefully, I have not really seen anything stellar but will be in the market for probably 6 dimmable LED lights for some recessed cans I am putting in my media room in the next couple of months so hopefully something good pops up!

There lots of LED bulbs at the Consumer Electronics Show, so that is a good sign.

Recently I saw this guy for about $35: 2640 Philips AmbientLED
It looks pretty funky. Has anyone tried it? Dimmable and about 800 Lumens for 12W.

I saw that one demo'd on a DIY Network show - it looked pretty interesting. I forget the details, but the housing basically really enhanced the light and made it more like an incandescent.

I have the Philips 60 watt replacement in one of my living room table lamps and Like it. I am waiting on the LSG model to come out to decide on what ones to go with. It beats the CFL that was there hands down. I like the color temp too. Don't let the Yellow "lenses" fool you. It looks pretty good.

I'm not much a "dimmer" user but since you mentioned it I decided to try it out. Until now I have never thought of dimming the bulb as they are always on 100 %.

There is a slight flicker during the dimming down or up probably due to the Insteon Lamplinc that it is connected to. The flicker goes away once you accept the level you are at. I can dim it down to 4% according to my ISY99 controller, I'm not sure how accurate that number represents the actual light output level, though. It looks acceptable, sort of like a small 7 watt night light, maybe just a bit brighter. I would use them in all of my fixtures that can take them except for the fact that the LSG one is on the way and I want to compare. Once I get a LSG (Ecosmart) lamp I will post a comparison here.

At 40 bucks per bulb I think I will wait a while.

They still are expensive, certainly, but even at $40 they will still pay for themselves in a relatively short time. You save 48 watts of electricity, you save on A/C costs and best of all, you save from having go up a ladder every 1000 hours to replace the bulb. An incandescent bulb on Amazon goes for at least a buck, so during the life of this bulb, you would need $25 in bulbs alone.

CFL aren't the answer either. They need to "warm up" when cold, and from my experience, they don't last anywhere near as long as they should. I have 25 can lights, and was replacing one at least once a month. With 12 ft. ceilings, its not something I miss since going to LED.

There is over 150,000 emergency room visits in the US each year, over half from those changing light bulbs.

I have been buying LED bulbs for a few years now and every single one of them still works,
I can't say for sure if these new bulbs will last as long as they claim but I know CFLs have
been a huge disappointment for me when using them with dimmers. The last CFLs I bought
were Sylvania Dimmables and I have had them fail in as little as 2 months time, I have had
others fail in as little as two weeks. The Sylvania Dimmable CFLS were about $12 each so
I think the LEDs will prove to be a better investment.

That would be an interesting study. Morbidity and mortality related to changing lihgtbulbs plus the cost of the health care and cost of lost productivity. It could be significant.

I have an EarthLED EvoluxS LED bulb from a few years back.
Used a small 'almost silent fan' to keep it cool.
Well now it isn't very silent.

I bought some of those too, I have my in closets so they don't
have a lot of hours on them. I like the idea of a passive heatsink
like the newer bulbs have a lot better.

Hey guys,

I'm gonna revive an old thread here... Panamanian and I just got back from Lowes and they had a special on these LED bulbs:
http://www.lowes.com...Dled%26page%3D3

$9.98 (and I was using a 10% off coupon). I picked up 15 of them for two of my chandeleirs (one has 9 bulbs, one has 5) - and tested them out on my UPB dimmers.

I'm quite pleased with them actually... they're 7.5 watts; 2700K color - so a little brighter than the incandescents they replaced; and they dim pretty nicely. They don't start quite as quick as the incandescents do dimming up - they kinda snap on at about 15%, but from there they dim nicely right along with the incandescents. Dimming down, they dim down almost perfectly with the incandescents all the way down. They are about 1.5" taller than what they replaced, so I can see them a little bit out the top of the blass bulb on the chandeleir - but all in all I'm pretty happy; and the WAF was good - she liked the idea of converting the light in our entryway from 540 Watts to 67.5.

I did a quick math calculation and by swapping the one light fixture from 60W bulbs to these 7.5, since it uses 9 bulbs, if I run it 4 hours day every day, these bulbs will save me $23.93/month, or $287.18/year at my insane $.4 kwh rates. That's a payback in under 4 months, so I'm going back to the store later.
