Moving a keypad - anything special I should know?

Howdy all,

I've never touched the security stuff, so I thought I'd ask what should be a simple question...

I have a Honeywell keypad that I need to move literally a few inches from it's current location to make room for an iPod wall dock. I've pulled the panel off the wall, so I see the 4-wire screw connections. I need to disconnect them to pull through a new hole in the wall - do I need to do anything to the system? Pull power on the panel? disconnect the keypad wires at the panel first, etc? I haven't studied the inside of the panel much to even know if it's easy to disconnect power!

(that's what I get for hanging out in the Home Theater forums and not dabbling in security...) :D

Thanks in advance,

Jeff

You can move the keypad without killing power, but be careful not to short the red wire to anything else. I usually bend the red wire in the opposite direction from the other wires when attempting such a wire move.

If you want to be totally safe, just unplug the alarm system AC power and disconnect the battery. When powering back up, connect the battery first then plug in the AC.

Any way to control security from the iTouch? Not as easy to control from a TS, but if that security KP isn't used often, you may be able to reduce wall clutter.

Well, not yet for me at least... The iPod dock will be reducing kitchen-desk clutter. :-)

(and can you guess the brand of iPod dock I bought? :D)

Depending on the panel, you're going to need to reset the real time clock on it if you power it down, otherwise any test reports sent to the CS will be skewed and late.
