OmniPro II - any hardware differences throughout the years?

Greetings,

I've an OmniPro II, purchased 10 or so years ago with many other components for a home automation project I never undertook.

We're about to build a new home, and I pulled it out of storage. Figured I'd see how out of date it is, how much support there still is and whether to sell or use it. To my surprise - judging by what I can see online, it appears it may still be a current model. If so, I may still sell and get something else if there are other solutions that better fit my needs, but I'd like to investigate what I have first.

So, first up - has the hardware remained significantly unchanged during this timeframe? If so, I'll certainly need to update the firmware - best I recall, I purchased this just prior to the unit becoming network enabled. I recall receiving notice that option was available shortly after buying it.

I've pics that clearly show the unit for identification - but being a new member, I'm unable to post links to them. There are numerous identifying labels on the housing, firmware chips and the board itself, but I've no idea which if any of these might be needed.

Thanks for any info.

Current model has 5 serial ports, I believe the older boards had fewer and required an expansion module for more.
Flash upgradable firmware too, I believe the older boards required new EPROMS to upgrade.
I don't know when the network port was added.

The board should be marked with a rev code.

Thanks much for the info.

Yes - the board appears to have only 3 serial ports. There's space and apparent hookups for two more on the board, but they would need to be soldered on. Probably not wise if expansion ports exist and they are needed.

RE a rev code - there's an etched field on the board titled "REV", with a label adhered next to it.  The label shows 023200392 - "C", with a hand written "b" or "6" at the end of it.

At the time I received notice a firmware update could activate the network ports, I'm almost positive new EEPROMS were needed - there was no flashing option as I recall. There are six EEPROM slots, five of them populated, the first two look to be firmware as they're both labeled with HAI stickers. First one shows "20A04-2 / 2.3C", second one shows "20A04-2 / 2.0".

I'm capable of swapping out EEPROM's, but don't understand the hardware limitations that may be present. Assuming new EEPROMS are available, do you know if upgrading to the latest rev would allow flashing in the future, or is flashing dependent on hardware as well as firmware?

While my account seems to be limited from posting images here in posts, below are links to them showing a pic of the board as well as some closeups.

I think you have one of the first iterations of the Omni Pro II.

Reposted your pics for you:

I assume that rev code is a julian date, 0232003, 23 Jan 2003.

I was looking for a board shot of the current model.
All the pics I see online don't have chips in the DIP sockets.
I'd have to check when I get home to see what mine looks like.

Yes, you can upgrade your firmware to activate the ethernet port on your OPII and bring it all the way up to the most current functionality.  I am not aware of any hardware based features that have been added over the years other than populating those two empty serial jack locations and migrating to flash upgradeable firmware.
