Question about ELK and smoke detectors

For the most part I would like to do wireless but if I used a wired smoke detector, do any 2 or 4 wire smokes work with elk?

No, the Elk installation manual (page 6) specifies which 2-wire smokes work with the Elk M1G panel.

System Sensor: 2W-B, 2WT-B, 1151, 2100, 2100T, 2151
Sentrol (GE): 429AT, 521BXT, 521B

I just looked at the Elk install manual and I found wiring for both 2-wire and 4-wire smokes. It looks like two wires go to the zone iinput and the other two wires go to aux power.

I was looking at buying this 4 wire smoke detector but it doesn't appear to have a battery backup.  Is this normal?

The smoke detectors get their power from the alarm panel, or an auxiliary power supply if you have a lot of devices that require power.  The panel's battery or the aux supply's battery provides the backup power in the event of a power failure.
