Receiving Phone Commands

My wife has been bugging me for years to get a home phone, however, I just haven't been able to constitute the cost / usage of the phone with our cell phones. Well, i think with home automation in my mind now, then I can justify the cost :o

I have not decided on a software yet for my Home Automation, and I will research for one that enables phone commands. One that I do know will work with phone commands is http://www.automatedliving.com/, but I'm sure there are tons out there.

My question really comes with what type of phone technology will work. I really like the idea of getting this http://www.magicjack.com/4/index.asp and only paying 20 bucks a year; however, I want to ensure using that will work with whatever program I choose for my HA.

And, is this something I should be asking specific program companies? Or, has anyone else used the magic jack in their HA setup and found it to work ok?

MagicJack is VOIP and a very inexpensive one at that... I just cant see getting a good service for 20/year.

Dont forget to check your location I know someone who signed up for it and was just given a phone number out side of their state because they didnt have numbers in their area and wasnt told ahead/didnt check of time.

we've had it about a year & so far it's worked fine for us. we use it with google voice. i've tested it w/ HAL deluxe & it works like it's a regular phone. the wife has not had anything bad to say about it either.

Thanks for the replies guys...wow, not getting a phone number in your area, that would suck. I'm not sure If I'd be ok or worse because I live in Iowa, have to check that site out and go from there.

I think the wifey will like it a lot, she has been bugging me forever.

Is google voice something that costs money or how much does it cost? i see it is invitation only right now.

Anyone recommend a set of cordless phones that would work in 3 levels fairly well? The main base phone will be in the basement, in the utility room, or next to it sort of.

I would need 3 or 4 handsets, and mainly going for quality of speech as eventually, i will have this hooked up to say commands into the phone so I can do HA.

I hooked majic jack up today and it is working great...I picked up a couple bluetooth enabled phones so I can send / receive phone calls from my cell on the phone also...now to find a softwar that incorporates majic jack into the program :(
