Remote Car Starter

How would being able to start my car through the web allow me to automate the process? I do, however, very, very much like the idea of beign able to start my car from the web.
Also, how would I hack a spare remote with a relay?
The third option is...intersting
Hacking the remote would be pretty simple - since all that is required to start the car is the press of a momentary button. You would simply need to open the casing of the remote, obviously knowing the button which you have to press to start the car, and attach a relay to those contacts. Essentially, whatever you would use to automate this process would simply need to trigger the relay to momentarily "bridge" the connection that the switch would usually manually do.

Viper's system supports the iPhone now, but I believe it is just a web app. There is another service which offers a web interface: http://www.connect2car.com/web/index.php.

I have attached a generic schematic that I just drew up... you can alternatively use a constant 12V source, and have the ground signal "switched" - this simply depends on what is easiest for you to do from your control panel.
If you would like more details on the operation of the relay feel free to ask, and ill try to explain some...

I am certain you can find them cheaper elsewhere, I just knew the RadioShack would have one. You also would not need a 40A model as listed, but again, for ease of posting purposes its what I found first

I am thinking I want both...the possibility to start my car from the web (mainly from work), and the ability to start it via my HA.
First off, will using the Viper auto start remote work with the mod above to the remote? I'm hoping so!
Second, I will read the entire post about starting a car with HA during my lunch when I get more time.

That thread about using the, whatever that thing is, is pretty cool...and, gives me many, many ideas about automating my HT as I was afraid about being able to simply say "watch movie" and have my tv, receiver, and blu ray turn on (much like my Logitech harmony remote currently does).

I think for now, though, I am going to find a auto start device (preferably one that can be turned on via web), and mod one of the remotes electronically and set a command to on / off.

Wow.. While I think this would be cool, particularly the iPhone app, I dont think it would be worth the $30/yr service fee for me - I'll stick to using my remote

I agree.
I have had remote starters on all of the automatic transmission cars I have owned since working for a mobile electronics installer years ago. Even on my company van for the previous company I used to work for.
I have never thought about integrating the remote starting of my vehicles in to my automation system. It's really not that difficult to hit 2 buttons when doing something during my daily morning routine.
Even now with the newer two way remotes I can't see doing this. It just wouldn't be worth the effort for me. It's a cool idea though.
Plus $30 for a service fee to start my car using an Iphone? The new remotes also have a range of something like 100 miles(exaggerating) and I am never that far from my car.
Even with the older remotes you will need some accurate soldering skills to say the least. The newer LCD remotes, not sure.
