Resolved: Motion sensor wiring help

I currently have an EK M1 with a simple setup. A keypad, bus expander, z-wave module and an Ethernet module. The only sensors I currently have is a water sensor on zone 8 that works great. This is a new install so it's my DIY project. I have two motion sensors that I had laying around for years (in case I decided to install a security system). I tested both of them with a two foot long 4 wire cable (22 gauge) and they both work perfect in a normally closed setup. I ran my cable (35 foot run) to the location of the first sensor and tested it and it doesn't work. I tried the other sensor and it didn't work! So i tested them again with the two foot cable and they work perfectly. So I decided to try it on a long run of the cable that I have (approx 50 feet) and it doesn't work.

Am I doing something completely stupid? Which is possible :)

Is there a limit on the distance? I tested the voltage and ohm impedance and everything seems normal.

Any thoughts?

thanks

Check your wiring for opens, shorts and grounds?

Distance for detection circuits can be in the 1000's of feet, so distance and voltage loss really shouldn't even be considered in your case.

I would ohm out the cables you are using to make sure you dont have a break in the wire.  Eliminate that first, then move on to the panel.

Fifty feet is not the problem.  You are probably connecting it incorrectly.  Our guesses would be better if you told us the make and model of the detector along with a description of how you have it connected.  It would also be good to share your "normal" voltage and resistance measurements.

Well after further checking it looked like it had a short in the cable. The cable i was using was old. It was laying around for years. I bought new cable and ran the wire and everything is working perfectly. Thanks for the suggestions and input! It is really appreciated. Love a community that helps each other out!
