Downloaded the new SageTv beta and initial thoughts are WOW! UI looks much better and a whole host of great new features have been added.
Here is the link for the download of the beta as well as the info about the changes in this new version from the Sage forums: SageTv V. 7 beta

I hope this version interfaces with the Silicon Dust's HDHomeRun (cable) easier...

I would mess with it, but Stanley Cup Playoffs start this weekend :D

Yea, I made the free upgrade cutoff by 1 day!!! :D

I've been using the SageMC plugin for almost 2 years now so forgot how dated the stock UI looked....does the new UI take over a lot of SageMC features?

I've been using the upgrade for about a week now. It is really nice. The GUI is 100 times better (although it needs dynamic menus - someone just needs to update it to v7), it is faster (less spinning circle), NO PAUSE with live TV!!!, and a great new plugin system makes adding customizations much, much easier.

There is little reason NOT to upgrade! It is well worth the $40 upgrade fee!!!

DAMN YOU! adding complexity... here goes next weekend.

Actually with the new plugin system for customizations, V7 is dramatically LESS complex than V6. I'm trying all kinds of plugins that I never had the nerve to try under V6. Stuff like fanart, Sage Recording Extender (SRE) and others!

I would recommend that you stop the Sage server, make a copy of your existing V6 Program Files/SageTV folder, and then upgrade. That way you can revert back to V6 if something goes wrong with the update. That being said, I have not heard that the upgrade failed with anyone. It seems to be very stable.

I'll be upgrading once the product is really stable. It looks like there are still some various issues, including performance issues with MVP extenders. I also strongly recommend you take a snapshot of your existing server (using Acronis TrueImage or a similar product). My system has been running perfectly, so I havne't made any changes in 2 years, and will wait a few more months before attempting 7.

I not trying to argue with you Dan, but I think you would find the V7 beta to be very stable. The biggest downside to using V7 is that many of the customizations are still being ported over to the new GUI. So there might be a favorite customization that you couldn't use in V7 yet. But more and more and being ported over every day.

Certainly the improvements made with V7 outweigh any non-ported customizations (at least IMHO). In fact, the new plugin system is so easy to use that I have added a bunch of new customizations that I was never willing to try under V6 because they could be hard to install and setup. So I am actually getting more usability out of my system by switching to V7.

As far as the MVP extenders go, I am not sure what else they will be able to add to make them work better. Certainly the V7 GUI is pushing the capabilities of the MVP extenders which are years and years old. You can always revert back to an older GUI on the MVP. Many users have done this since the V7 GUI runs slow on the MVP. This way you can have all the benefits of V7 on the server and any non-MVP clients/extenders, but run the older GUI on the MVP which is lacking processing power.

Just a suggestion...

Touchscreens and SageTV V7.......

Maybe someone already has already found a good solution (if so, please post it), but my early and very quick look at the new SageTV 7 GUI lead me to think it would not work very well with touchscreen controls.......

The new GUI seemed more geared toward mouse flyovers (something counter-intuative for touchscreen control). If there is a touch screen plug-in that is more "menu driven" like the older Version 6 GUI, I will make the upgrade switch....till then, it is a no go for my setup.... hopefully there will be something that works soon. ;)

Check the sage forums...i was reading about some option to enable that makes what you are saying work better. Something called ' Focus follows mouse' or similar. Hopefully that helps. I don't use touchscreens myself, just happen to read about it.

Been running the beta of Sage 7 on my HD200 and I am in love with it so far. It seems as a HA enthusiast you go through your ups and downs. Some days projects aren't working well. Other days everything clicks and you are overly happy thinking of the prospects that you are one step closer to having everything the way you want it. Well running Sage 7 on my HD200 has been one of those 'up' experiences.

1.) The interface is awesome as it. Added a few tweaks, like new theme, and I must say it looks better than my Dish DVR.

2.) The guide now looks so professional. The shows are color coded by type (news = yellow, sports = green, etc)

3.) Running ShowAnalyizer on my server and that interfaces perfectly with the Sage recordings. What made my day was the the comskip is running as you are watching a show. The thought of having shows automatically processed for comskip while you are watching it is worth the trouble right there.

4.) The plug-in system is a much needed addition to the interface. I am fearlessly trying out new plugins without worrying about messing up my system. I can just as easily remove the plugin.

5.) Integrated the Sage with PlayOn, which is also in the middle of a huge update (new premium service with new channels). Ability to watch all those service providers on demand... priceless.

So is it perfect? No. But it is a huge step in the right direction and much more polished.

A few things on my wish list:
Control HA through Sage. I saw that you can now do it with HomeSeer. Hopefully other platforms will be supported too. (ISY / Elk and others )
Browsing/Control client/app for iPhone/iPad. I saw someone has already made this for the droid.
I also think Sage plugin developers should have some type of store to sell some plugins. I think there would be more incentive to develop high quality plugins if there were some type of commercial prospect.
Exciting to think what the future holds!

CQC can also control SageTV and it is through the same utility that the droid application uses.

I'm waiting for the MyMovies plugin!!!
