What have people used in garages? devices types and brands...

Had them put in the old place and never had any problems (did not do install there). They never went off when starting cars, though we never let cars idle long in the garage. When we weld, or do heavy grinding, we tend to cover them.

Any ideas or thoughts?

You aren't supposed to put smoke detectors in un-conditioned spaces. Heat detectors are recommended. Smoke detectors in unconditioned spaces and/or spaces that have as part of normal use particulate matter in the air, cause false alarms.

This includes the kitchen, bathroom, workshop, attic. Unconditioned spaces can have condensation or other water vapor issues causing false alarms even if there is no source of particulate matter.

Having said that, I have a smoke detector in my garage and it never false alarms. The garage is attached with two walls and the ceiling touching inside house and is thus somewhat temperate. I also have one in my attic, but my attic is conditioned.

I also put one in my workshop. It did false alarm, so I switched it out for heat only. You definitely can't weld near a smoke detector!

Heat detectors would fit the design criteria.

Can you use System Sensor 5601P with an attached garage with bedroom above it?
Should attached Garage Heat sensor be rated for 134 or 194deg? Also Fixed or Fixed/Rate of Rise?

I was thinking of the attic spaces, that's where I have my garage detectors, attic space over garage.
Even here in the mild PNW, it'll get 120+ in the attic in the summer.
135s are too close for comfort for me in that situation.
 
In the main body of the garage, or my shop, I don't think its ever been over or even close to 100.
So sounds like 135s would work well there.
