Well, this tells me that you have no connection to the motor. Have you verified you have the RS485 end firmly attached to the motor? Can you try connecting to another motor(s)? There is a slight chance your cable is somehow not working, does it have some lights/other indicators showing that it is transmitting/receiving?
After checking, I see that my somfy port is set to 4800,O,8,1.
Also make sure there is only one motor connected to the network when reading address, if other motors are on the line, it will return error. Alternatively, with the other motors connected, enter the address, click on Single and try reading the label or some other setting.

My primary problem (I think ;-)) is that I can not get any feedback from the motors. (No power to these motors is required right?, just communication via the cable). My USB to serial does have lights on it and is functioning. All i have connected now to debug is my computer to the motor config tool to the USB to Serial connector (orange/yellow) connected to the RS485 cable (Red/Black) from motor plugged into the rs485 jack of the motor... There is no "turn on" switch on the motor right?
The computer is now at 4800,8, O,1, for communcation... 2 motors have been tried at this point... Any other thoughts?

Just to read it off of the computer? (not to run it, just to read the info?). If so, can the power run off of power distribution panel and RS485 run from the computer? ill try that next... (i think by pure luck, ill hit the right combination sooner or later...)

Just to keep people posted, spent the morning with Somfy technical support...
The only conclusion they came to was that my regulator / transformer (Meanwell 480-24 DRP) power supply was bad. Although it powers up, its pulsing (Green on, green faded) and occasionally has a slight click to it. This being bad on not sending enough juice to the motor would explain both problems, why it doesn't work when directly attached to my computer as well as through the HAI / Power distribution panel.

Update: For those following and thinking about this: Somfy's brochure illustrates a MeanWell DRP 480-24 supply regulator. This is incorrect and they will fix. The DRP 480-24 is the European version. So the input on this device is 200-240VAC which doesn't work for us.... The real one should be DRP 480S-24, which regulates it down to 110-130vac...

So you had a 240V power supply? My mean well power supply has a voltage switch. I use model SE-300-24 for 5 motors, but here is a spec for SE-600 that can power 10 motors: http://www.jameco.com/Jameco/Products/ProdDS/295902.pdf
