Text Message Alerts

Hopefully there is no such thing as stupid questions - but is there a way to send text alerts on events?

I have HAI OmniPro II, a home server and WL3.

In WL3, I can set up a rule to send an email based on an event (like Alarm Triggered) and read somewhere you can send texts too. I do see where you can select SMS, but how/where do you enter the cell phone number to send them to? What are the steps to set this up?

If you can send an email then you can send text. Nearly all carriers allow email to text IE Verizons format is [email protected]

If you can send an email then you can send text. Nearly all carriers allow email to text IE Verizons format is [email protected]

Thanks for the quick reply. I can do that via email no problem, but when I enter the info into WL3, nothing happens. I'll have to play with the SMTP settings.

Anyone using AT&T Email? If so, could you let me know what the settings should be? I've tried 25 (default) and 465 for SMTP - along with entering my id and password.

Does the WL3 have an option for SSL??
 
I'm not sure about SSL, but I'm having no luck getting this working. Email works fine, but when I use [email protected] or [email protected] nothing goes through. I've tried not entering any info on the advanced settings, to using exactly what I use for the email settings (that work) to using Port 25, 465, etc.

My log just states that "An error occurred attempting to send email to the SMTP Server. (0xc0000005)"

Not sure why it works for email but not for SMS.

that just doesnt sound right... maybe I am missing something. You are trying to send a message to [email protected] ? or from?
 
I use my AT&T mobile mail texting (used to be Cingular). Works fine for the last few years. I use it for a variety of events. I prefer not to sign up for texting messaging with any services. IE: Doing screen scrapes of CNN/BBC sending me "hot news" items, alarm events, etc via the HA box.

My SMTP setup is using Comcast, Verizon or Gmail. They all work fine with STunnel on the HA box. It runs silently in the backround.

STunnel is very "light" and you can find information here about it:

STunnel Wiki

Using it allows some flexibility with your email service leaving your server email configuration at conventional email POP and SMTP ports.

Wait, STOP, STOP, STOP......
WL3 has a weird feature that isn't all that apparent. You DO NOT need to fill in any SMTP settings, and you don't need any access to a mail server. LEAVE THOSE FIELDS BLANK. When you don't fill those in, the WL3 uses the HAI server they have for you. In other words, they send the e-mail for you. This is what I do and it works fine.
 
I just tried leaving everything blank (other than the email address of where to send the message) and that didn't work either. Where does WL3 store the default settings for this server information - maybe that's where the problem is?

HAI doesn't make the settings available to see or modify. It could be that they send the email using port 25, but many cable companies block this port. I'm thinking about switching from DSL to cable so I need to test for this as well.

For me when I tried to manually add in SMTP settings it didn't work, but if I left them blank, it worked.

I'm assuming you can send e-mail fine from the house with an e-mail client on a PC?
 
If you're getting a "from message not verified" message, make absolutely sure that the From email address in the WL3 is correct... typically any email sending device has a place to specify the "from" address - and these days, modern mail servers are very picky about what you use there; and if you're authenticating as a user, the from address has to match the user you authenticate as.

thats exactly why I asked about SSL I beleive ATT internet /email requires SSL auth on the SMTP port of 465
 
I have an AT&T cell phone and at home I COX Cable/Internet. COX blocks port 25 so you must use their SMAP gateway. I set the SMTP gateway to smtp.east.cox.net. COX does not require any authentication when using their gateway from their network. The e-mail goes from my PC to COX then to AT&T with no problem.

Several years ago I had AT&T internet and they did not require authentication when coming from their network. I have friends that still have AT&T and I belive they don't require authentication from their houses either.

Your ISP should provide a SMTP gateway that you can access directly, but some don't. This is why third party mail providers, like GMAIl, sometimes use a non standard port. It allows them to get around the blocks that your ISP may have in place.

I might have missed it, but who is your ISP, and have you tried their SMTP gateway?
