Typical burglar?

why is everyone hoping they don't cut the real one and hiding the real one in metal pipes and such? why wouldn't you just use cellular monitoring and take the phone line out of the equation?

A cellular line is ideal but it's also one more monthly expenditure. Encasing the existing phone/cable/satellite lines in a metal pipe is a one-time cost.

If the burglar cuts the exposed lines, a cellular line ensures the call will go out. However, the cables will have been severed and splicing them together is a giant nuisance. A combination of protected cables and cellular link is probably the best bet.

I lost a watch, some money, and my peace of mind.

That's ultimately what led us to move from where we were living to peaceful central PA. It felt like us being invaded was just a matter of time in AZ, and I knew all the sensors and deterrents in the world wouldn't make me feel confident being at work while the wife and kids were at home during the day.

I too have been looking into a move to PA..So. California is becomming a cesspool, I had my house broken into twice without losing anything ( siren scared them off) but had to replace broken windows. I got a few big dogs and had no more problems but I am getting sick of what is happening to California.

The "typical burglar" will steal things.

(There, now that I've stayed on topic.....)

For us, crime was simply just the last straw. When we started trying to figure out what it would take to militarize our cul-de-sac, we were suddenly indignant that we had to fight that hard to keep living somewhere we really really REALLY didn't like.

Ultimately, the top 3 reasons for moving were:

1) Education
2) Climate
3) Crime

Here in central PA, we've definitely resolved all our issues, and then some. Given how incredibly wonderful this place is, it just makes us shake our heads that we endured AZ for so long.

(amusingly, now that I'm in such a low low crime area, I'm finally living in a house that's wired to the gills for security. go figure)

It is always nice to come home at night and find your siren going off and a big window broken out with a PC monitor next to the window, it was even nicer that they did this in the middle of winter and you have nothing to board it up with and it is 13 degrees outside.

My area is still listed as having a much lower crime rate then the national average but over the last year everything that can be sprayed with gang signs has been, if a house sits empty around here it gets stripped of alll its plumbing and wiring. It a shame to see someones house destroyed like that and then tagged with 6 foot high gang graphiti. In a town near me a older woman was shot and killed when she told a gang banger to stop tagging her property. It used to be a murder around here was very rare, now it seems like it happens once a week in the neighboring towns.

I have been retired for 5 years now so I don't have to worry about finding a job. I saw a story on the web that rated Columbia county as one of the best rural areas in the U.S.. I also have been reading where many people are now retiring in Pennsylvannia. What is really nice is how much cheaper houses are there. The housing market here is depressed now so I am waiting a a year or two before I put my house on the market. I am 48 now and just want to find a nice area where I can live the rest of my life without it turning into a crime infested hole.

WOW, I feel lucky now. Gangs? What are those? Graffiti? Ok, an occasional high school prank maybe. I leave my keys in my trucks (mostly at home) and four wheelers sit outside with the keys in them. Of course all the equipment can be driven off with ease (but ANYONE can find a Case, John Deere, etc key as one key usually fits all). Ut oh, I just gave an open invite to criminals. Hope I didnt jinx myself. :) Um, I live in um, Montana? Ya, montana :(

Not sure what central Texas rates as far as a national average but I am assuming its much lower. Thats not to say theft doesnt take place here, but it appears its much less than elsewhere. Course I am not in a metro city or anything close.

Summers are killers but its nice to wear shorts at christmas (sometimes B) ).

I LOVE seeing people take action instead of complaining and doing nothing. Hats off to those that moved, secured up, got dogs, whatever. We need more action and less babble (I wont mention Oba,,,,oh nevermind, I will leave politics out of this).

Retired at 48? Nice and congrats!

I looked up your area and the crime rate listed is much higher than where I am at, the data for my area is from 2006 though and my area is filling up with scum from Los Angeles where there is over 100,000 gang members. Here is a link to the crime data for your area.

I found some crime data from 5 years ago for your area also so you can see the change.

Working with your neighbors can solve a lot of these issues for free. If you have a key to your neighbor's wireless network, then your house can send alarms or make calls over their internet access. You can also have one of your house camera watch a neighbor's house and vise versa so even if your dvr's get stolen, you have records on someone else's system.... Just depends how well you know and trust your neighbors, but it is cheap and they are the closest people to help. You can have an alarm go off in their house if you are robbed, etc... lots of creative options.

What about cellular jammers? I've always wondered if these are used by thieves as they are not very expensive, and can even be made, it's not that difficult to wipeout cell reception in a area. If they know to cut phone line you think they might think if this too.

I would like cellular backup and buried armored data lines going directly into my basement, but I currently have neither, the overhead telephone and cable lines really annoy me.

Heck, I think the best idea is running a cat5 or 22/4 wire out there along side everything else and shorting the wires, and as soon as an open is detected, go nuts with alarms. Seems pretty clear they'll cut every wire they find out there.

I like the tamper on the fake phone line idea - at least that way hopefully the alarm will go through before they find the right one. I wouldn't want to run tamper off the normal phone line with instant trigger - I'd hate to be woken up in the middle of the night because the telco was working on the lines!

Around here, the phone lines always go into a box outside the house that anyone with a flathead can open... All this talk has me convinced that I should just put a tamper switch on that and security screws to keep it closed... Set off the alarm the second they even open the box. And, follow with a GSM backup.

Cell jammers can be obtained, but they're really not too common - and, you have to know if you're blocking GSM or CDMA. Considering most cell monitoring is GSM, maybe be the oddball and go with CDMA! And of course get the cell alerts via the internet connection... Not gonna get too many more options.

Now, if you were really slick, you could go a step further... Hang a fake panel in the master closet - make it hard to get into with a screamer mounted above it, and empty (or maybe a dye cannister ) - put your real panel somewhere you'd never expect, and mount the cell repeater high up in the attic. Keep 'em busy on a wild goose chase.

Or, if you want to catch them - you could use the tamper on the phone line to trigger a silent-alarm mode so they think they can take their time once they get in, but really already have the cops on their way... Depends if your priority is to catch 'em or scare 'em away.

Too many options... Then again, I don't care if they smash & grab my TV (I'd prefer that they close the door behind themselves though so my cats don't get out) - I just don't want them having time to grab the computers with all our pictures and irreplaceable memories. It all comes down to what you're trying to protect.

I know on DSC 1832 panels you can have the phone line monitored so if the phone gets cut you can have the keypads beep or the siren go off without supervising your phone feed to the panel. I haven't looked at the M1 software in a while but I would think it could do the same thing.

Only problem with this setup is if you lose phone service alot it could get very annoying.

The best solution is to have the phone company move the NID in to your basement. Then the only way a burg could disable it is if they cut it at the pole if you have one.

You guys will love this video. It's called Tigerteam and they test security systems. I wish I could do this for a living they use a cell jammer to disable their ADT  alarm system

This one Cell Jammer will do both for the low price of $239 , doesn't look like you need to toggle it, just blasts garbage using three different attenna for the diff bands, only works for 10m range though they have more powerful ones that do the same.

The one you link to does cover EVERY cellband and carrier currently in operation......AMPS, CDMA, GSM, TDMA, PCS, DCS, 3G.
