Vitek Cameras

Dan and others, these cameras are really good. We just installed 10 of the first camera on this page at work. The quality is very good. As good as I've seen in an IR camera.

What model did you get? Did you install the indoors or outdoors? My VITEK VTC-IRLED30A was only 2 years old before it started acting up. Now it won't switch properly between day/night mode, making it useless at night. Picture quality is 'ok', definitely not the best I have seen. I had a replacement in my hands for a while, but that one had issues out of the box, so I just gave up on the VITEK brand for cameras and ordered an EverFocus ED560 (which has its own issues, but it works).

IMO, IR LED's are useless in outdoor applications, at least until cameras start being shipped with the advanced analytics software which some of the high end cams now have.

So I got 3 of the 4 new cameras installed. I was able to tweak the settings so the picture is acceptable. Still not as good as I'd like, but much better than my old cams and since they were only about $20 more than the old ones I really cant complain.

The IR LEDs don't work on one of the ones I installed so I am going to have to send it back. Not too happy about that since it is a real pain getting to the wires in the attic. I have to crawl across the beams on my stomach once I get near the connections. Not fun!

One problem I am now having is that these cameras are way to sensitive to motion at night. Every time a bug flew by it would detect motion and record. I lowered the motion sensitivity to help prevent that, but not they are not always detecting people during the day!

We installed a bunch of new cameras at work last year, and the quality is unbelievable. They are Acti TCM-4301 megapixel IP cameras, and run about $350 each, so they are a bit pricy for home use.

This picture is scaled down, taking while viewing using the web-based viewer across our network, and has been saved as a JPG (further reducing the quality). If you could see this full screen on the NVR computer, you would be amazed. You can actually read text!

Anyway, like I said, a bit pricy, but thought I would throw it out there is you are looking for higher quality. These cameras do not have IR LED, but they do have models that do. We had enough ambient light in the office at night, that we did not need the IR.

Was the endeavor an upgrade to previous security cams or a new install?

The reason I ask is that I did a setup in TX the year before last and while I had control of what was being installed I didn't approve the money spend. My price was $60k for 6 cams (4 outside and 2 inside) using MS security DVR software on a Dell server. I though it was a bit high for what I was getting. It was a warehouse though and a lot of wire needed to be pulled. (for a gas and oil company).

I replaced a bunch of standard cameras w/ IR LEDs, as well as the DVR. We switched from a propriatary Linux based DVR to a WInXP box running Nuuo. The cameras were "OK", but the quality was just not great. I look at security cams not only as a deterrent, but also as an evidence gathering tool. If a crime is committed, and you just have a blurry face, the cameras were not worth installing in the first place.
