What OS for your Home server?

"I'm only interested in Windows Media Center, not SageTV. "

Isnt it the same tuners/drivers? Or does Sage control the tuners directly?

I recently moved from server 2k3 to XP Pro because it supports more drivers. In my case, it supports the Belkin F5l009 Network USB hub. I was having occasional USB lockups with the Anywhere USB hub I was using when mapping devices into HCA. I'm happy to say the problem appears to be solved. IMHO there's no compelling reason to run anything more than XP Pro with Home Control Assistant. YMMV with other choices of course.

Well, I don't want any OS wars to get out of hand. I won't stop you (as I'm not a moderator), but be aware that a topic might get locked down if things start to get out of hand.

And please, let's try to get back on-topic (Dan said that already).

boy....i didnt mean to start WW3 here... :) I made my choice anyway.... Windows Home Server was my choice...i ran into the first problem when my virus software wont run on it....sigh...other than that ok so far...

Alright, that's enough guys, we need to stay on topic, or start a separate thread.

Hopefully you weren't referring to my post. If you were then I apologize. I was just trying to answer the question as stated in the title of this thread: "What OS and why?". I have no personal preference myself. They're all just operating systems....

Not at all, it was a specific post, but the post has since been removed. Everything is ok now

I use W2K3 server because I have 8 PC in the house running XP. I dont want to download the updates 8 times so I use server with Windows WSUS (Windows Server Update Service). This only runs on server, it downloads the patches required and then the PC's in the house hot it for updates.

I also use it as a repository for my virus scanner, but that does not require server.

I also run a domain so users are managed in one location.

CQC runs fine on the server. I also log using the database driver. The server has a digi ethernet device server and a PCI serial card.

As for drivers, you can usually get away with an XP driver. I am using an IBM Intellistation (model 6223) as they are rack mountable and not too deep for my cabient.

I've had okay luck with WHS, the big thing is it does seem to be a bit picky about hardware. But if you pick server hardware you should be fine. I had a IDE/SATA card and just could not get it working with WHS, all kinds of BSODs and other problems. Since I've taken it out and rebuilt it has been fine.

I am having the same issues when turned my motherboard controller from IDE to AHCI/RAID mode. BSODs.... Sine the controller is embedded in the motherboard I've resorted to just sticking with IDE, but am not happy about it.

I don't think it's a driver issue...but i don't have a floppy drive available to be able to tell...
