Which Switch

Rupp,

But the Insteon switches don't use slave switches either. That's what he was asking for.

I'm traveling this week but I'll look into that switch you mentioned. Leviton used to use slave switches but they have gotten away from it with the newer version of their green line switches.

Oh OK, I have several that are in 3 way setups but it does take 2 regular switches.

A slave is not critical. I just need to know how to do a 3-way setup and I had incorrectly assumed a slave would always be used. It looks like with Insteon I've got to do any comparison with two regular switches.

What is driving your desire to update to UPB and Z-Wave? Commmunication, quality, look and feel, other???? Just curious.

Something new. I've been using X-10 since the late 70's. It takes a lot for me to change; thus Insteon a few years back (a bridge of sorts from X-10 to Insteon). Mostly installing UPB for all of my light switches and where there are light / appliance modules will be installing Z-Way.

I have numerous 3-way switch setups in the home and today just using regular Insteon switches (travelers are in the boxes though). Before the Insteon I had used the travelers with X-10 aux switches. I don't remember which ones though.

Regarding local operation, which switch type did you like the most? (look, quality, feel etc)

Right now UPB; not installing an Z-Wave wall switches at this time (never intended to).

My initial Z-wave lamp module (not switch) testing slowed me down a bit. I maybe should have started with Vizia. (Do have Viza RF controller and Vizia serial controller - both working fine).

Z-Wave

Intermatic support was great with a new replacement switch in one day.

I have swapped out module with same for now, put a hold on installing any more Z-Wave and have gone back to updating my Insteon switches with UPB.

The Leviton HCM06-1TW are X10 2-way and use the wired slave switch. They're a bit expensive and (I believe) out of production.

I've had a number of the receive only HCM06-1DW installed for ~ 9 years now. They've been bulletproof. They have the gated AGC for contending with line noise and I've had no false switching as compared with other X10 products.

The Leviton units do incorporate the resume dim feature and they will not activate in response to a dim or bright command. They are best operated using the X10 extended code protocol. Not sure if your controller supports this. They also support X10 extended code "group" or "scene" programming which I've been using for coordinating on/off sequences.

I've been moving toward Insteon over the past few years. The HCM06 are the last X10 remaining. I can't bring myself to replace something that has performed so well for so long.

The above said, this product line is nearing (or at) it's sunset. If you are simply replacing existing units to "get by", they may be an option. If you are looking for a product for the long haul, it might be good to look at current technology.

One last item - I do not know if the 2-way version will broadcast a on/off status when the slave unit is activated. My guess would be yes, but I have no way to verify.

Thanks for the info especially the model numbers. I ordered a leviton 3-way setup 2 days ago (HCM06-1SW & MS00R-10W). According to their help desk all of the green line is 2 way (which I doubt) but I decided to try one of them to at least see what switch feels like. I have a couple of locations where I don't care about 2-way coms so if I'm right I'll be able to use it. I'll likely try insteon next and then maybe a UPB set up. I just don't want to pay a buch of money for interfaces before I'm more sure of what I want.

Thanks again.

Barton,

I can confirm that my HCM06-1DM are not 2-way capable. Nonetheless, things do change over time. Leviton may have decided to change to a common configuration for manufacturing ease.

Please let me know if the HCM06-1SW does turn out to be a 2-way unit. I have one of the HCM06 dimmers controlling a 7-way setup in my upstairs hall (6 switches). I want to switch the lamps to CFL's and add 2-way communication. Going with Insteon would require replacing the HCM06 and the slaves at around $280 (i've been waiting for a wiz-bang sale). If I can simply replace the dimmer with the HCM06-1SW I'd save over $200 and not have to reconfigure the wiring.

I'm looking for a 3-way switch and companion with the following features
- X10 capable
- notification of local activation
- "true rocker action"

I've checked the technologies spreadsheet and it appears that I can do what I want but I'm having trouble identifying the actual vendors and parts. I've called some vendors but the information I've been provided has discrepancies relative to their own advertisements. So instead of hoping that I get what I want I thought I'd ask.

I've also searched extensively but haven't gotten to the bottom of the problem. I suspect that the information is in the forum and I just haven't found it. If you can shed some light on this or point to a link that does I would really appreciate it.

Cost is a factor but not critical. At this point I'm doing some experimenting to see what like before I jump in with both feet. I currently have some older x10 switches that work great but don't provide notification of local activation and feel like crap. Before I change technologies I want to see if there is an option that I like in X10.

Thanks
Bart
Smarthome switchlinc 2380 and 2382 is the best answer for this. Get both of those and you are set.
