Wiring a garage door

Here are some pictures of what I've setup on a garage door. I am using a Rosslare AY-S55 Weigand keypad that interfaces with the Weigand port of one of my Elk keypads. This Rosslare unit is piezo electric--zero moving parts. The output of the interior mating Elk keypad controls a relay that actuates the garage door opener (a rule is setup in ElkRP to activate the garage door opener with authenticated keypad access if between the hours of 7A and 9P). I like that all of the authentication is done in the Elk M1. The exterior keypad is just a "dumb" data entry device. Finally, I have a sensor on the garage door so that I can be alerted when the door is open, but I've installed the garage door sensor in a slightly unconventional fashion that keeps it out of site. The sensor magnet mounts to the top edge of the door. Have a look:

P.S. If you are mounting the Rosslare keypad, don't use the included screws. They are junk, and the heads twist off with the least amount of torque.

Looks great. I think most people are mounting there sensor on the top of the garage door (seems better then on the floor). Because of the 3" gap the sensor provides before tripping, I didn't even use the "L" bracket for mine.

I also saw another post recently where the sensor was mounted on top of the garage door as in your picture.

BTW, is that keypad weatherproof?

My garage door used to look that clean and nice, like 17 years ago. But yea, the top is pretty common in a home, mine has been like this 4 years and counting now...

Looks great. I think most people are mounting their sensor on the top of the garage door (seems better than on the floor). Because of the 3" gap the sensor provides before tripping, I didn't even use the "L" bracket for mine.

I never thought of ditching the L bracket. Good idea. I'll give it a try.

Yes, the outdoor key pad is weather proof. In fact it is completely potted. You could dunk the thing in water and it would be fine.

BSR, Essex also makes fully potted, outdoor use keypads with various output styles that can be used with the Elk. They also have keypads that include prox readers for dual use.

My sensor is on the top of the door, too.

The relay just bridges the contacts of the door opener button on the wall. My ElkRP rule closes the relay for 2 seconds to activate the door opener.

I used the door opener button as well, but you could also go directly to the control unit and connect it to the terminal screws used by the door opener button if you prefer a tidier installation.

Well, I bought one from Target Distributing in Maryland.

I froogled "Essex ktp" and came up with www.internet-security-inc.com. I have had no dealings with them, so I can not vouch for them.
