Let me first say that I have never connected directly to my M1 via serial cable to a pc/laptop--I only use a Cat5 to the XEP with the XEP connected by serial cable to the M1.
Having said that (and I defer to others), it seems highly unlikely to me that you could ever fix the IP address your XEP is using with a direct connection (since the XEP is not even in the mix with a direct connection).
I don't see how you can change the XEP's IP address.
I'm repeating myself, but here's the physical setup I'd try: M1 connected by serial cable to XEP, XEP connected by cat 5 to router, and laptop/pc also connected by cat5 to router (or, as others noted above, you could take the router out of the mix temporarily and connect the XEP directly to the laptop/pc via cat5 cable).
Once these connections are in place, try the steps in 39 again.
Wow problem solved. I was able to change the IP address in my router and then make the changes to the XEP. Thanks everybody for this huge help. Sorry if I busted b@$&$
