My buddy had a bad experience with centralized lighting system....
There are so many things that could have been wrong from improper installation to poor choice of systems / bad design that have nothing do with a centralized topology. Some people have been burned buying a poorly constructed...
A few hundred? For the electrical contractor to do a automation prewire? Or for the EC to let some other unlicensed person do it on their permit and Insurance?
Neither sounds likely.
It really depends on your budget. Retrofit or New?
Are you a hobbyist or do you want an entire solution?
Lights, climate and shades? Lutron RadioRa2 and Lutron QS wireless shades.
IPad/Iphone control? CommandFusion
Local electronics control? GolbalCache type devices
Other systems are more reliable.....
Any system that is not reliable is worse than a regular mechanical switch. Reliable systems exist that don't require special wiring.
Ra is very reliable. I have never had a service call on Lutron.

I think herd hit on it pretty well. Lutron doesn't want their product dumped on the market without post sale support. Lutron is intent upon maintaining their position as the quality leader.
You can buy it from a cut rate online retailer who gives no support whatsoever or you can buy it from...
