Arming ELK Question

I have just got my Elk up and running but am baffled on how to arm the M1 to each of the 3 modes; STAY, AWAY and VACATION.

After a couple of weeks of using it, I was able to arm the AWAY only once, and VACATION once. But I have no idea how that happened. Whether I press the EXIT key or STAY key, it seems to always arm STAY. What am missing?

Normally pressing Exit puts it into away mode. There is a feature that says if you hit the exit button but never actually open a door during the exit timer, it reverts to Stay mode (sounds like your issue). To cycle through the different modes, keep pressing the button. For example:

Multiple presses of Stay will cycle through Stay, Night, Night Instant. For Away, I believe it's Away, Vacation - or something like that. That said, there really are three modes for security. Stay/Night are only different if you use rules to make different things happen. Night Instant eliminates the Entry delay and will instant-trigger if a zone is violated. Of course in stay modes, interior sensors are ignored.

For away, Away and Vacation are no different, again, unless you use rules to differentiate them.

Thanks for the clarification. Since I am new to Elk, I don't have any rules set up. My intent is the ISY would do all program actions that are required. However, the ISY can't speak (although I understand people with Apple Macs can make this happen) and the Elk has some limited vocabulary that can be programmed. I'm not sure how the ISY would interact for that, but a talking house is really a subject for another post.

If I am using my ISY to arm/disarm the Elk, is there a way to change the arm status remotely through the ISY (not the ElkRP)?
