Cisco Compact 24-port Gigabit Switch - Experiences?

You may want to also consider the D-Link DGS-1024D. It is about $160 right now at Amazon ($80 less than the Cisco). I bought mine 4 or 5 months ago, and have not had any problems with it. There are 31 reviews for it on Amazon, 25 of which give it 5 stars.

I have the FL set up in the Laundry room closet. Its flush in the back of the closet; a bit tight but its two cans; one HAI pretty high up. Above the HAI can I put HAI Wireless transciever. Below the HAI can is a Leviton can. Switch is inside of the can (now 9 years or so). Outside and flush to the back the closet I put a DD-WRT configured AP. So this Leviton can has two switches in it. The original combo FIOS switch and a smaller 12 port switch. I keep the covers on both of these panels. The FIOS combo switch gets warm to the touch but not hot. The 12 port switch remains cool to the touch.

To keep it at a level of WAF I cut parts of the wire shelving that was originally sitting in the closet such that they could still be utilized. The laundry room closet is deep enough that it works ok like this. I can open up the HAI can with no problems as its between shelves; but to open the Leviton panel I have to remove the contents of two wire shelves and the shelves themselves. The house is one floor but elevated (newer FEMA style) where as the garage is at "ground level" and the rest of the home is about 8-9 feet up on whatever was used. All my new wire access is via the attic; which is large but difficult to move around in. I had the home prewired for alarm and home run to the same said closet (HAI Panel) and I prewired it for audio, network, telephone, TV also all home run to the same wall. Other than the difficult access to the panels the whole set up meets WAF and is totally "removed" from "prying" hands. (will take a picture of it). You have to kind of look for it as even in the closet its not really noticible with stacked shelves of laundry products.

Last year I set up the neighbor with an HAI panel. The old alarm panel was sitting in a kind of deep and wide 2nd/3rd bedroom closet. The right side depth was about 3.5' which was plenty of room to mount the panel. To work in the closet though I had her remove pretty much everything. This setup is easy to get to but not really noticible because the door of the closet is smaller than the closet itself and the panel is on a wall adjacent to the door such that you have to walk in the closet and look toward the front of the closet door to get access to the HAI panel.

Those Netgear ProSafe switches may fit 2-deep inside the enclosure. The original GS116 fits nicely into the Channel Vision Large Universal Product Holder

and I think 2 will fit piggybacked - but not sure. Haven't looked at my switch in a long time.

Not sure if the CV Univ Product Holder (Large) will snap into a Leviton panel. Might have to use self-tapping screws.

Leviton Velcro bracket, or just Velcro, may do the trick fine.

I was thinking the same thing. My concern is the fact that they don't have fans, so stacking them might be a concern. That said, I am going to see if there is a way to stagger-stack them so that the sit at an angle so to speak. Might have to fab something...

Netgear also has the JGS516 and JGS524. Both unmanaged Gb switches, rackmountable (tabs are removable) and 13" wide. The JGS516 has a side-mounted exhaust fan, so I assume the JGS524 does, too. The fan in my 516 is fairly loud. That's why it is still in the box for now. Probably would be okay if mounted in an enclosure.

I have been using the 16 port version of this switch for > one year - it has performed well. The fan in this is about as loud as a full size PC's power supply if noise is going to be a factor.

So I am finally getting around to my structured wiring project and am completing my planning. The good news is that I was interrupted by the birth of a second son, so needless to say, I have been busy.

But it also means there are more options for Panel mountable Gigabit Switches. I want 24-ports. Future Proofing.

I am looking at this one:

Cisco SR2024CT 24 port 10/100/1000 Compact Gigabit Switch
Cisco SR2024CT on Amazon

It has one good review. I know that it is more of a small business type switch, but its size and capabilities seem to be perfect.

Anyone have any experience with this switch?

That's the one I was thinking of - I looked for a while for it but couldn't locate it - I thought it was Leviton, not CV.

I believe Leviton/CV are compatible; I think OnQ is slightly different, but some of the products I linked above had 2 sets of holes to adapt to any of the brands. I have CV and OnQ cans - I could look later and see if they match.

As for drilling - I doubt most people feel like turning their cans into swiss cheese - I drilled mine for the M1 but only after trying several alternatives... I don't think it'll ever be moving though.
