Connecting computer to M1G

Here is a little secret on using those RJ-45 to 9-PinD adapters. Most serial port devices use only pins 2, 3, and 5 of the 9-Pin D connection. You can easily fish the unused wires from the adapter out of the side where the metal part of the D connector meets the plastic case of the adapter and use those wires for additional serial runs (or other applications) since a cat5e has eight conductors. Of course you will need to get some 9-Pin D solder connectors and manually solder those unused wires, but it's great use of a Cat5e run (don't waste those unused conductors). ;)

Also, don't forget to get the insertion/extraction tool for this adapter. You will need it if you have to remove a pin once it is "pushed" in the socket.

On another note, why not just use the modem in your computer to connect to the M1? Just plug your phone linei nto the computer and if the M1 is on the same line, then you can get in.
