Here is a little secret on using those RJ-45 to 9-PinD adapters. Most serial port devices use only pins 2, 3, and 5 of the 9-Pin D connection. You can easily fish the unused wires from the adapter out of the side where the metal part of the D connector meets the plastic case of the adapter and use those wires for additional serial runs (or other applications) since a cat5e has eight conductors. Of course you will need to get some 9-Pin D solder connectors and manually solder those unused wires, but it's great use of a Cat5e run (don't waste those unused conductors). 
Also, don't forget to get the insertion/extraction tool for this adapter. You will need it if you have to remove a pin once it is "pushed" in the socket.
