The cable labelling convention that i suggested in the first post of this thread is what I've been using on my house so far and i've been very happy with it. No cheat sheets needed that can get lost. Very little room for error (as opposed to mismatching a serial numbered cable to a list).
For anythign that ends up in a outlet in a room (i call them media outlets) the labeling convention nor the cable color has any reflection on the purpose. This is important since cat5's can be repurposed many times during their life.
Any cable that ends up at a hardwiredd device (motion sensor, thermostat, etc) is labelled accordingly since they are very unlikely to change and if they change it's a small effort to relabel.
My convention may same a bit cumbersome, but i got used to it very fast and don't even use a cheatsheet anymore when making labels.
