Hi All,can anyone with the knowledge please advise me on what would be the most efficient and best driveway sensor to install on my driveway, its being repaved in a week or two,is the one to bury good to use because when the drive is dug up i can easily bury it, i have the Elk m1 Gild and ISSY994I. THANKS

Cartel (or whatever they're called now) is one of the best out there, assuming you're not going to spend for a loop based system and detectors. Basically the magnetic based sensors.

Preferably, you would have conduit installed from the house to a pull box adjacent to the drive and large enough conduit installed to the center of the drive, depending on the manu's instructions.

If you are in a position to bury a probe that is probably the way to go. Cartell is good but there are many others as well, just make sure its not too close to the road or a garbage truck might trigger it also.

I've never been in a position where I could bury these probes so i use wireless ones and have had great luck.  Since I use GE wireless sensors I use these:

Just add batteries, stick them in the ground next to your driveway and your done. Batteries last several years.  I paint them to match the environment and mount them in cement once I have them where I want them.

I have two of these http://www.amazon.com/Driveway-FM138-Mighty-Mule-Automatic/dp/B0002YP97S/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1458710232&sr=8-1&keywords=mighty+mule+gate+sensor . They work fine with the Elk M1. As RAL said, they don't need to be under the driveway, along side works fine. And ditto on putting the sensor and wire in conduit.

There's a difference between units like you posted and others. Operation is similar, but the better ones have an analyzer and sensitivity adjustment. Putting the detector in the center of the driveway per the directions and inside a pipe is the best installation practice, especially with no driveway installed. Allows service, sensitivity to be adjusted to cover the width better than just to the side of teh driveway. I've had non-detect issues in retrofit situations with that scenario.

I'm not sure what an analyzer would be, but the one I linked to does have a sensitivity adjustment. I simply wired them up for max sensitivity and called it a day. Been working for 10 years now with no issues. My drive way is about 12-14 ft wide, a wider driveway may need that type of sensor buried near the center rather than near the edge to avoid non-detection issues.

Hi Guys,I forgot to mention that there is about three or four feet between my driveway and my neighbour's driveway, would the sensor still work for the side of the driveway or will it detect my neighbour car? Thanks

More to it than just tossing in a sensor and hoping for the best by maxing out the sensitivity. While the detector portion works on the same theory, there's quite a few differences between consumer level and pro install devices

Spend for a real unit, not  a cheapie, install in the center of the driveway and you're going to need to adjust. Further from the neighbor's driveway would be better.

I have a Mighty Mule sensor like 42etus and it has worked fine for many years. (I did have trouble once but that was from a contractor hitting the wire with a ditcher even after I clearly marked where it was). It is beside the driveway. If you have a close neighbor drive you could put the sensor on the far side (farthest from the other drive). A tube under the drive is a good idea as it gives you options on location.

Bare in mind that the sensors that DEL and I have linked to detect moving metal, ie, cars, bicycles etc. If you desire to detect people or animals, you'll need a different solution.
