Driveway vehicle detection

I have two of the 3rd type of sensors. They work pretty good. I have one receiver hooked to my labjack so HS can announce driveway alerts. They work pretty good. I do get false alarms when the wind is blowing hard because I have them mounted to trees. I plan to put in some post this spring when the ground gets thawed to decrease false alarms. Overall I am very happy with them.

I have thought of adding some IR beams as a backup or to monitor for people but would have to run wires for that and it just sounds like too much work :D

Guy, my snow blower can shoot the snow as far as the blower you pictured. Of course, being able to say that you have a V8 snowblower is pretty cool :D

Anyways, Wayne, did you pick a solution yet? I noticed SmartHome sent out an e-mail advertising the sensor you were considering.

It would be great if there was a radar based driveway motion sensor, since it should be 100% accurate. I have one of those SmartHome radar based indoor 'chime' unit, which can sense motion behind the walls etc, pretty close to what I want, but the range is only a few feet I believe.
Dan I do not want to hijack the thread but I would love one of those radar things. Do you know if these are still available?

Not sure, here is all the info my invoice shows:

7251W RADAR SENTRY-WHITE FRAME

A quick search didn't reveal anything, but maybe someone has them on eBay or something. I bought 3, gave one of them to my neighbor (who doesnt seem to be using it, I regret giving that one away).

I am going to try one of these tomorrow or so, see what the range is, and if they can be used as a driveway sensor.

Have a look Here. This will direct you to a site that has a couple of beam sensors. Scrool down a bit and then click the link there.

Radar (radio detection and ranging) is the fancy name. Just search for a microwave-only motion detector. For domestic use the most comon are PIR and PIR+microwave, but i the commercial world microwave only is more common (usually indoor). Notice that they will detect movement from animals and trees (just like ultrasound).
