It is always my opinion that the hardware is usually ok and its operator oversight in many cases.
The hardware is difficult to damage for the most part (although the telco circuit can be affected by a surge under the right conditions).
With so many features in a product it is easy to overlook something. I worked in a lab testing alarm equipment. Often we would have a problem with a system and either another engineer or tech would walk over and point out the obvious or a quick call to the mfg and we would be up and running.
