Scott - the iPad will talk on your wireless network and will either run eKeypad to connect directly to the M1, or you'll have some midway service that you'll connect to with the ipad, and that'll connect to the Elk.
Apple clearly is focused on Wifi - as they don't even include LAN ports on their newest computers... so everything iRelated is wifi based.
eKeypad and ElkDroid connect directly to the M1 via IP address; all the other options (CQC, Elve, Homeseer, etc) all have their own connection to the M1 - either IP or serial... and your ipad will connect to that automation server, not the M1 directly.
