Getting Elk to report out using NextAlarm ABN Broadband adapter

I installed the NextAlarm ABN Broadband adapter on the system, registered it with NextAlarm, confirmed that it works fine by plugging in a phone to the Broadband adapter. I got the voice-response from NextAlarm that confirmed success. I hooked it up to the Elk, and now do not get a phone fault, so that seems fine.

But, NextAlarm still isn't seeing any Elk arm/disarms/activity. Is there anything I need to do on the Elk to get this to work?

I did leave the NextAlarm phone # in the system, do I need to do that or should I remove it?

Well, crap. I disconnected from ElkRP, and now it reports phone fault/failure to communicate. So the reason NA isn't seeing anything is cuz the Elk isn't sending anything, cuz it thinks the phone isn't there.

New question: As soon as I plug the Broadband adapter into the Elk, that phone fault should go away, right? I wonder if that cable is bad; doesn't seem loose.

Well, I suppose I can at least tell Beelzerob this thread added 3 posts to my total count.

After making umpteen physical wiring mistakes, it works fine. I had cut an existing phone cable in half, it wasn't using the right colors. I cut a different wire in half, now it works fine.

BTW for the lurkers - like a total nimrod idiot, I misread the directions, and pulled the RJ31X out from under the house. I misunderstood this paragraph, that was a gigantic waste of time, and I took out stuff I had spent an hour putting in 2 years ago. I could have just pulled out the cable from the Elk, and put the ABN cat3 direct to the Elk.

4. Locate the alarm system's telephone connection. This is usually an RJ31X (wide Ethernet-style) or RJ11 (standard size) telephone jack, next to or inside the main control box. There will be a telephone cord connecting the alarm system to the jack. If your alarm system is wired directly to your telephone line and does not have a phone jack, then you will need to have one installed before you can use the ABN adapter. An RJ31X connection is not required for ABN. A standard RJ11 will work just as well.

hey IVB, have you tried other VOIP providers before? I'm thinking of killing my comcast phone line and just get a VOIP and a hacked PA2P device. This way, I'll just pay $3 per month rather than $42. But not sure if VOIP is supported by NextAlarm. Let me know if you did.

I don't have VoIP; obviously I have enough issues with Ma Bell

i used VOIP (via AT&T) with NA for a while with no problems... I know Martin over at AO also uses VOIP without problem... I think although NA officially says they don't recommend voip, it's a case by case basis whether or not it works for you

I guess it won't hurt if I try. Our Comcast Digital Voice also uses VOIP. I never had a problem with NA, not even once. I'll order the box and I'm going to hack it. I just don't know if it'll be able to call E911. That's what I need to ask the provider.

I also use AT&T for NA with no problems. I think the trick is to use a VOIP provider that explicitly supports fax, which AT&T does (it's a free option you can enable). If they support fax, they obviously support modems, so the lowish speed modem on an alarm panel should be no problem.

I may be stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid b/c I can't quite understand this one Do you mean that you just unplugged the cables going in to the phone connection on the ELK?

(going off to find the ABN manual to see for myself, been tempted to get one of these...)

Good luck. It is much nicer to not have to worry about the Elk seizing the line and disconnecting my call because i've chosen to report to NextAlarm if my system gets armed...

Okay, so I am *still* an idiot...I never hooked up my m1 to the phone before. Now, I want to use a nextalarm abn.

I am obviously making this too hard.

What do I have to wire up to get this to work? Just tip/ring? wired straight into an rj-11 and plugged into the abn?
