Input Microphone Hardware Question

Why would it get confused? Each input has it's own speech monitor...so each one would (in Homeseer's case) report who is making the request.

Would you plan on using a single (maybe Windows 7) computer to handle... Voice Control, Automation, Surveillance, entertainment, and maybe more? My old (and I do mean OLD) P3 HA computer can't handle all I'd like it to now. I keep thinking if I can find a newer, faster, better, HA PC.... my automation will be better too.

Right now, I have a single PC, that does my Security Cameras, video processing for that, runs my Home Automation (Homeseer) and serves out my movies / daily use files (kind of acting as a NAS).

Then, it also will (eventually...assuming Windows 2008 Server "can" handle multiple mic. inputs...like Vista / Win7...) be processing my Audio inputs...might work, might not...we'll see...

If I don't get audio in, I'm ok...so long as the rest of HS and other "stuff" is doing what it's supposed to.

I do like the idea of running my server in a VM, just to get it away from hardware failures...but I'd need to upgrade my mobo, etc. as the "best" processor that will go into this box is still only single core...not even HT...oh well...

My system is a 2.12GHz CeleronD with 3 gig of ram, and as much HD space as I can get my hands on!

I'm working to move that space out to a NAS of some kind...

Post 6 http://www.cocoontech.com/forums/index.php...c=15114&hl=

That's the goal...cheaper and expandable...enough cores that I would be able to run all the same stuff as the current server...that's assuming I'm running the software on it...otherwise I can save 20W and $35-40 and put a single core Atom with HT on the machine (if it's single purpose).

Ok, I bought the bullet and bought an AP800 for 200 dollars off of ebay. Now, a couple questions regarding it.

I haven't really looked into it much, but how does it connect to the computer? Via serial, usb, mic, etc?

And, I didn't buy the SECU-16 as I'm a little confused on how that works. Can someone elaborate how the combo work together?

Do I need to buy the SECU-16 to have this work or can I work without it for now?

My PC is running Windows 7 64 Ultimate with the following specs:
ECS BLACK SERIES A780GM-A AM2+/AM2 AMD 780G HDMI ATX AMD Motherboard
AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition Deneb 3.4GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache Socket AM3 125W Quad-Core Processor
Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 ST3750528AS 750GB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive
Kingston HyperX 8GB (4 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 Desktop Memory

It has a serial port on the back for control. I believe it can take ASCII commands, which would mean that the ELK with an XSP could control it. I don't have one yet, so I cannot comment on the specifics. But I think others here are using it, and maybe they can shed some light on the issue. I'm planning on picking one up also, so it would be nice to have some info on how the thing works. :)

Yup its serial. I have several. Uses 9600 baud or below. ClearOne also makes a configuration program that you pretty much need to set it up. The program was written back in the Win ME days or before. It runs under XP O.K. but not too good under Vista, I hear, but I never tested it under Vista. Win 7 I doubt it, but you can try. You can download it free from ClearOne.

The AP800 also has many terminal connections that can be programmed to indicate which mic is gating, among other things. You can also get that info from an ASCII command, which you have to ask it. I'm guessing that is why you think you need a SECU-16, to monitor these terminals? I personally never had any trouble using a command to determine mic gating, but I guess a SECU-16 could do it as well. You can also control the AP800 via these terminals.

One other thing. The AP800 doesn't use RCA jacks for audio. It uses professional balanced pairs so you will need a means to convert to and from balanced audio. I used some converter boxes to do it, but it can also be done with transformers. And you also need special terminal blocks to plug in the back to access this audio. They usually aren't included with e-bay purchases, but Digi-Key and others sell them.

So, how do I set up my mic to the AP800? Or, better question, how does the AP800 take the input of the mic? Are they like hard wired into the AP800? If so, I can do some splicing.

I received my unit today, and first question is the connections...it says to use a Phoenix Push On Connector. I am not sure what exactly to get for this as my used unit did not come with any...any ideas on what I should get?

As I said in my last post, DigiKey

Excellent, tahnks for the info...I remember looking at digikey links but they were broken. That was probably another post, however, and I probably got confused. That is exactly what I am looking for...thanks!

to get one thing straight, if I get the SECU16 item, then I can have HS figure out which room the microphone is coming from, without it, it won't know...is that a fair assumption?

If you have a SECU16 you can figure out which mic is gating, but you can also do it without one. You can ask the AP800 which mic is gated, and it tells you back in a command. So the only trick is knowing WHEN to ask it. Depending on how you are doing Voice Recognition, you usually can get info from that saying "I heard something to recognize" and then you can ask the AP800 "who said that?" and it will tell you which mic.
