M1(EZ8) -- the obvious choice?

I'm getting ready to order my alarm on Monday (hopefully getting it by Friday or the following Monday). So far, the Elk M1EZ8 looks like the clear and obvious choice, mainly because it supports:

* input events via open standards like RS-232 and RS-485. I've built more than a few hardware projects using Atmel microcontrollers (including, among other things, a set of networked RGB Christmas lights where every fully-addressable light consisted of an RGB LED and its own Atmel Tiny25 microcontroller), so the ability to make my own input and output devices and interact with them directly via the controller has major appeal to me.

* WHEN/AND/THEN/OTHERWISE logic in response to events. So I can hold the glassbreak/vibrate sensors at arm's length and use them to notify me when they're allegedly triggered, but hold off on actually triggering the alarm & notifying the alarm monitoring company until either the door gets opened or the motion sensor just beyond it gets driggered.

* respond to events by outputting datagrams via RS-232 and RS-485. Going back to the glassbreak example, I could conceivably respond to a glassbreak event by snapping a few photos with an IP camera, uploading them to a web server somewhere, sending my WM6 phone (Sprint Touch) a SMS message that launches my 'viewer' app, alerts me to the glassbreak, and shows me a picture of the alleged aftermath so I can decide whether to ignore it or go into realtime video-streaming mode so I can remotely lower the hurricane shutters while watching the video to make sure my kitties aren't directly below the lowering hurricane shutters. Or plays an announcement bitching at the person standing in the front doorway if it detects both the front door and screen door (~4 feet away) open at the same time... and gets more forceful if another sensor detects the flashing infrared LED hanging from my kitty's neck and knows he's nearby and might walk out through both open doors...

and, as far as I can tell, either X-10 capability out of the box, or at least as a cheap/straightforward upgrade option (still trying to figure that one out).

So... are there any other systems I might be interested in that I'm overlooking, or is the M1EZ8 really the obvious hole-in-one that it appears to be so far?

If you don't have a 24/7 HA PC paired with the M1EZ8 then I would get the M1 Gold. I had the EZ8 given to me so it was a no brainer for me. If you can afford the extra cost I would get the M1 as it does have the phone options that would be nice. Someday I might upgrade myself.

Would your opinions about the preferability of the M1G over the M1EZ8 change if I mentioned that I *WILL* have the ethernet interface from day one, so I'll be able to access it using Opera Mobile/Pocket IE with my Sprint Touch, and will be able to have it send fake Sprint-SMS via email to me whenever a major event occurs anyway?

It really depends on how much you will get into the "home automation" side with your Elk. If you do, as stated above you will like the logic triggers such as "When the telephone is ringing" and the on-board voice capabilities.

Like I said I would probably go the extra few bucks and get the M1. If you did a check about 99.5% of the people here have a M1 and not the EZ8.

Hmmm. OK, I did more research. It looks like when push comes to shove, the only fundamental HARDWARE difference (that can't be overcome with expansion boards) between the two is that the M1G has a flash rom onboard to hold sampled audio data, which it uses to implement verbal menus & notifications, and to communicate interactively with users who dial in over the phone.

That said, the EZ8 effectively can't be called for status messages, nor can it be interactively reprogrammed remotely via voice phone with touchtone keypad, because without voice (or at least wave audio), trying to beep coded messages to users would have been more trouble than it's worth. HOWEVER, both the EZ8 and M1G can be connected to via 28.8k modem and reprogrammed remotely.

The EZ8 needs the $45 M1EZ8MSI to gain a serial port.

The EZ8 needs the $50 M1EZ8TWI to enable speakers & microphones to be added for 2-way communication between the alarm monitoring company and whomever is in the house. With both the M1G and EZ8+board, you still need to buy the speaker+mic at extra cost.

The M1G has 16 input zones out of the box, and maxes out at 416.
The EZ8 has 8 input zones out of the box, and maxes out at 408.

Both have native support for powerline networking, but you need to buy the physical interface itself for around $25.

Both have native support for wireless zones, but the actual receiver needs to be purchased. At the cheap end, you can buy a NX-548e for around $60 and handle 48 wireless zones, or at the high end you can buy the official ELK-M1XRF2G for around $130 and handle 144 wireless zones. If you use a NX-548e, you also need a $3 wiring harness, and might need to pay an extra $10 or so for an external enclosure if you don't plan to mount it in the same box as the M1.

The cheapest M1GSYS4 I've found was around $530 with shipping on eBay.

The cheapest M1EZ8KB(S) I've found online was around $250 + shipping.

Add a little over a hundred bucks to the M1EZ8KB(S) for the 2-way voice board and serial board, and it comes down to this: the M1G costs about $120 more than a fully-expanded EZ8, but is superior in the following specific ways:

* 8 additional input zones out of the box
* adds voice/wave audio
* can be interactively queried and reprogrammed with a touch tone phone.
* 50mA digital outputs (vs 10mA for the EZ8)
* 1 more output driver that's meant for voice/sound, but can directly drive a siren instead if desired
* nicer terminal blocks, bigger enclosure.

Have I missed anything?

I also recommend the M!G....for the reasons you listed.

Keep in mind there are IF/AND/THEN rules, but no OR/ELSE clauses.
