Media Server Suggestions

I am looking for some suggestions for a media server for my home. I have built a HTPC before and really don't want to go that route this time. I am looking for something that can store my ripped DVDs, avi files, mp3s, etc. I don't mind using my PC to rip content onto a hard drive. I currently use HomeTroller2 for my home automation. The entire system should work well with my theater, I have a 1080p projector on a 110" screen. I was looking at Popcorn Hour to serve the content. Any thoughts, suggestions? Not looking to spend a fortune. Just a nice way to store and catalog my dvd and avi collection.

SageTV + HD Extender

SageTV has a free trial but you won't really get the feel unless you have an extender (quite possibly made by same people as popcorn hour).

I agree. You can get the Extender + Sage software (which acts as the server) for about $250 total. The only problem is the extenders are so popular that they are out of stock at this time. Hopefully it won't be long before they have them back in stock. While most people use Sage as a DVR package, their music, picture, and video distribuion capabilities are excellent too.

guys at work love their tvix box.... just a box with a hd in it... will play avi, divx avi, wmv, mpeg, vob, and many more...

or you could get a old xbox and do the xbmc mod... I did that... but I just built a htpc and getting rid of my xbox with xbmc on it....

I've been popping back and forth on tvix and popcorn hour. Cnet gave the later an amazing review as did Gizmodo. My main concern is the quality of playing AVIs over the projector that I have downloaded from a torrent. Currently I convert the AVI to DVD format and burn a disc, but that takes over an hour. SO I want something that I can dump these movies on, and play in decent quality on the projector.

this doesn't address your server question, but a cheap, easy way to get your video to your projector would be the philips dvp-5992 dvd player. it has usb 2.0 so you can copy stuff you download to a usb drive or flash disk and connect it. it's divx compatible. 1080p upscaling via hdmi connection. they were recently $39 at costco.
