New SageTV Extender "SageTV HD Theater "

Yea once they sell out again a time will come where you can sell yours for the $200 you paid for it. These things get crazy in depand.

I ordered one, but am thinking I should have ordered two. I think I'll wait to order another one once I get the HD PVR hooked up. :( I'll probably try to sell the HD 100 at that time, although, it works great...I would just like the smaller footprint.

Anybody know what protocol it uses for streaming media (video, audio and pictures) from a non-SageTV server?

UPnP, SAMBA/CIFS, NFS, FTP, other?

It would take a little work to get it going with a streaming server other then SageTV.

It will however work in standalone mode just by attaching a USB flash or HDD.

You see all the interface and whatnot is rendered on the server, the device itself aside from it's new standalone features doesn't really do to much. It's not at all like the "blue screen" extenders iirc you called them.

I'm not saying it couldn't be done but it would be faster to work with a popcorn hour or something else designed to work that way.

Its sad. I was contemplating it as a viable media player option with the possibility of using SageTV in the future if I change my mind. Specially, since you speak so good about Sage (the company), I would expect them would give good support to the device. Nice that it supports MVK files. I think I'll continue spec'ing out a PC for this purpose. Much more expensive, but the potential is much higher too.

Might look at it's cousin the Hauppauge MediaMVP, more applications support it and I assume their operation is similar.

It looks like the HD200 is supposed to be compatible with NAS units (manual backs this up), so I would be surprised if it doesn't support some of the protocols elcano mentioned. However, if you do want to go ahead and build a PC just to play media, I recommend you take a look at GeexBox, which can turn any old, slow machine, without a hard drive, into a network media player. I used this for a while to access my video/dvd libraries and MCE recordings on a windows machine.
