Hi

Having posted once or twice, I decided to look at the other forum topics, and to also follow suit and introduce myself for future reference.

Based in South Africa, I purchased an ELK M1 Gold (Not available locally, had to order it from the US)
- thanks to ELK, they decided to sell directly to an end user, as there were no local ZA distributor. UPS Postage costs were more than the alarm itself.

I installed it based on a distributed system(to shorten the home runs), with the Main board and a M1RB situated at one side of the house.
Other side of the house I have an P212, feeding a M1XIN and M1XOVR.
Outside in the Garage I have another P212S, also feeding a M1XIN and M1XOVR.
From the Main board, I have a Caddx NX448EI (International 443.92Mhz version), feeding some Caddx/Interlogix RF units/remotes.

I also have a little ContactID to GSM converter, that will take the Alarm codes from ContactID, and SMS me the alarm/status etc.
My Armed Response company is connected via VHF Radio Link, monitoring the alarm only via the radio PTT inputs.

So Far, over and above all the PIR's etc, I have also connected the Garage door to the unit, to reduce the number of remotes.
(My car doesn't have HomeLink, it not being very popular here in ZA as a built in option in cars)
Next step in the automation process will be the Driveway Gate.
Then the lights .......
Then the ethernet interfaces etc. (the internet / cloud is still very expensive here in SA)

Previous alarm systems used were:
1) C&K 236
2) Honeywell Omni-848 EU with Wireless and 5800 series RF units.

Personal background, I am just an owner/ operator, but with an electronics/telecommunications background, I do all the installation wiring myself.

Hi Riaan,

I'm still pretty new too, but my wife is from South Africa so I figured that was worth a hi back at ya. She was born in Jo-burg, moved to canada in 2001. There's a good chance we'll be heading to SA to visit some of her family in 2013 some time!

I'm also in the midst of hooking up my Elk M1G system, so far so good. Though moving slower than I'd hoped as I have to work, then I get home and have to relieve the wife after she's spent the day taking care of our little 7 month old guy! I figure I'm about halfway through, all window sensors done on the main floor, some motions installed and one door contact.
