Purchasing Elk-M1G

You will also need a ELK-M1XSP for lighting, if your going to have it hooked up to the Elk. That way you can leave the on board serial for CQC.
I think the kit comes with ELK-M1XSP (M1 Lighting & Thermostat Interface)
No, the M1 does not come with an XSP unless somebody put together their own package, but it is not included in the SYSG4 package. I also encourage the use of the M1XEP ethernet adapter. Another reason is to allow the M1 to send email, and IVB is absolutely right. You will quickly tire of switching cables around in addition to not having all the features. That is also my configuration M1 > XEP > CQC.

I thought it did.

Will you need wireless? If so the Caddx board, sensors and the accessory harness (W0035 I think was the part, it is only a few dollars but connects it to the elk).

If you need that.

Plus of course if you need to control irrigation (a relay board or the combination one) and any additional input expansions.

another thought: how many devices [keypads, expanders, etc] will you have, and where will they be located?

A Data Bus Hub is a very very convenient thing to have.

2 Keypad & 1 expander ( may be 2)

well, not at home so I don't have this handy, but read the Elk manual about wiring (pdf available on their site). i *think* you'll need to run them in series if you hook up 4 things directly to the Elk main board. If you've homerun all the wiring, that's not an issue, we can walk you through the hookup of the wires when you have the stuff.

Guys, correct me if I'm wrong, I don't think a Data Bus Hub is required for him, just an ease-of-adding-stuff type device, right?

If you are comfortable with crimping on RJ connectors then the databus hub is great. If not then the retrofit hub would work.

You can also bring the cables into a patch panel and jumper them to the hub. That's the way I did it.

FYI - I trust my punchdowns a lot more than my RJ crimps, which is another reason I did it that way.

Do you have a picture of that setup? I just went through wiring my DBH, and somehow had a bad batch of rfj45 jacks, what a pain that was. I wish they had a version which used those removable green terminal connectors like on the M1. I am also wondering why they can't do the return path on the DBH board itself, so you only have to run 4 cables (basically extending the 4 terminals on the expansion boards). I ended up using flat 6wire cable tho.

I don't have a picture of it yet. What I did was terminate each wire with a RJ45 jack and use a 12" jumper.

The reason you have to run all 4 wires is that electrically, it's not a star like it appears, but a single long daisy-chained bus. I was wondering the same thing.
