Questions to sell automation

Oh, one more impact-side statement about how our life is different. I guess my list goes to 11 :-)

oh, the TTS, I forgot the TTS.

The wife & kids very much like the 7:00am "It's time to wakeup. The time is now 7:00am. The temperature outside is 41 degrees. The forecast today is..."

It repeats at 7:30am, which is right around when the kids are whining about what they're wearing, and the wife can say "See! It's cold outside, go put on your turtleneck."

I really appreciate all the responses here. You all have great influence and I hope to get to the same level one day. That will take some time, however I do want to make one final comment. I have sold one switch to a customer that hopefully will add as they too live with it and learn other things to be controlled similarly. We price those to be a few hundred dollars which can be a challenge to upgrade their two dollar existing switch to a smart one but that's really all they need to get going. I retro-fit most everything though we are going to be leaning on some of the trade alliances we have to get into the construction phase though I agree their bottom line is always money and lighting control seperate from the security system is a tough sell.

The main point is let's not forget the middle class here. Even if it's just a few units it's something. The UPB system is perfect for an introductory to automation with much less investment compared to other systems.

I am serious, in this case size doesn't matter ( yea for me ), I am now aiming at specific lighting designs or scenes to increase exposure. I think a bullet point survey could be beneficial. Are any of you using marketting materials in this way?
A one sentenced question may encourage the conversation and some of the examples are in line with what we represent. Except for the really cool voice telling you the time and temp. Things like the panic for bedside, entertainment, go to sleep, arrival, late night break, early morning artificial sunrise, romance, dinning, annoying left on lights, emergency, vacations, and remote access have been discussed. Can you all think of something I might have left out?

Again thanks for your efforts in discussing for all of us to get better at this.

I want to make one more suggestion.

I want to preface this advice by saying I'm not suggesting you change your product line-up.

Lutron has a class called BURST that they teach free of charge at the local distributor (there is one in Nashville). Much of the class is technical and specific to their products but a significant amount of time is spent learning how to sell lighting control. I found it very useful and have had increased success using their techniques. They specifically deal with the paradigm shift of a $2 light switch compared to an automated switch. I did switch to Lutron after this class but the product I was selling previously was lacking some......reliability.

Considering the fact that I have actually met both Opie and Ranger Digital in person, it may be best to avoid disputing that last post. I've always thought of myself as the quiet, shy, calm type....

Have I possibly misjudged my own character?

[sarcasm]
No, I don't think you have at all.
I have always wondered when you will come out of your shell and tell us what you really think.
Maybe someday you feel comfortable enough to express your true thoughts.
[/sarcasm]

Ranger, lets just say I've learned my lesson about using inferior products. I will gladly share details via PM because I've also learned to be careful what I type in public forums. <_<

ah opie come on! Do you really care if someone doesnt like your opinion? Especially a manufactuer? Forums are for exactly that, expressing yourself, good or bad opinion.

We have been offering the driveway sensor package and that seems to be generating more and more interest as the home owner becomes aware of it being possible.

Any of you offer these type applications? We have also been successful offering a freeze detection system to turn off or on pumps.

The driveway probe and motion detector that we have found can send rf 3000 ft and has several channels if they want more sensors.

Pretty cool, check them out, MFG Dakota.

Matt
