I think all three methods you mentioned are valid options, BSR... trace the wires if you can (which isn't always easy on a patch panel), check out an outlet that's already been connected, or, failing everything else... guess and if that doesn't work then try the other option I've used all three methods before.

Not that it is a good idea to be sloppy with your wiring, but if you end up using it for network connections, most modern routers will fix a wiring snafu where you have created a crossover wire (by wiring one end A and the other B or vice versa).

Again, it is important to do it right the first time. But I do have one run where I messed it up and I haven't even bothered fixing it yet because it is only used for a network run and the router corrects my error.
