Temp Sensor Hooked to Zone 1-16 ELK M1

I know you can purchase the ELK-M1ZTS for about ~$55 bucks and hook it up to Zones 1-16 on the ELK M1. Are there any other less expensive alternatives? I have ten sensors I need so 10*55= $550, ouch! Is it possible to just get the actual temp sensor myself and wire it up to Zone 1-16?. What type of sensor does the ELK-M1ZTS use? DS18S20, LM34 etc??

Thanks!

Alas the temp zone sensors is a weak spot for ELK.

The M1KAM supports only one 1 Wire device.

A good number of forum members have been SCREAMING OUT for a neat multiole temp zone sensor for the M1. I still have an application for 6 in my new house. I have Cat5 cable runs to each location and if ever there is a temp zone sensor that you can happily have on a wall in a new house then I will break through the dry wall and fit them off. I would never think of fitting the current ELK temp sensor offering where it can be seen.

I modified one of their temp zone sensors where I wired the ELK-M1ZTS to a RJ45 socket on a single blank plate and buried the guts in the cavity and the clipped in the existing 1 Wire sensor int the RJ-45 socket. I only did this for an AV closet cuz I had to read the temp and control the airflow. It looks tidy enough of a closet but you wouldn't want them on walls that you can see.

Temperature and humidity sensing is a VERY important input into an automation system at the moment ELK are not there and I given a good number here have expressed their desire for a solution without joy is dissapointing. Even if the ELK-M1ZTS was repackaged into a presentable form factor would be a result. I have been looking for a temp zone shell to mount on a a blank electrical plate and do the burying trick I have done before but cant find anything that would fit the bill. Very expensive to buy a working on only to strip out the not required bits and adapt the ELK-M1ZTS.

I think a lot of us have been wishing for some attractive and cost effective temperature sensor options that would work nicely with the Elk.

Perhaps Spanky will chime in on this one.

I bought a few of these some years back and have been meaning to hook them into my HA system: AES ATP1000

Does anybody know whether they should work with the Elk? I did try one once and didn't have any luck, but I didn't pursue it. It uses a three wire connection, power, sensor and ground. I'm not sure that I had it connected correctly. Installation instructions are available by clicking on the PDF icon to the lower left of the photo.

Does the M1-ZTS always blink? This would be quite annoying for a sensor in a bedroom.

In the short probe version is the thing in the RK45 plug the actual sensor?

All in all it's a pretty ugly assembly...

For air temp sensing i suppose something recessed into the a gangbox wouldnt work too well because it's out of the air flow right?

For now my 2 M1 ZTS's are going outside on the front and back of the house. I don't have a solution yet for other in room temp monitoring except to take the temp from the Aprilaire t-stats.

I agree that new temperature sensors are needed for the M1. It has been a red headed step child for too long! :)

I will see what I can do to get it going.

Blinking Question: The M1ZTS blinks with its 1 second per bit manchester encoded data of the temperature.

Although faint inside the sensor box(i kind of makes the box glow), it is too noticeable for me to have the sensor in any bedroom....

Something with a recessed boby and the sensor sticking out that fits in a singe gang box would be nice...esoecially if it somehow worked with decora plates...that way you can add it on to a switch location....

I'm putting my 2 ZTS's outside for now (under cover)....no solution for inside at the moment..the hobbyboard one wire stuff is also not exactly esthetically pleasing...

From reading the forum it seems that quite a few people are interested in knowing the temp of most rooms in the house eventhough they may not all be individual zones....i suppose with some rules in an automation package you can then use the info the adjust the thermostat for the whole zone....(the famous...'the baby's room is cold so we turn up the thermostat in the master bedroom and just lay on top of the sheets'..example). Short of having individual zones i guess thats the best thing to do...

Hi Spanky,

Just wondering wether the red headed step child ever got into the works. I couldn't wait and bought three of the red headed step child variety and modified them so they could be installed into a new home. I have posted a photo so you can see my modified M1ZTS.

They look the goods, I honestly couldn't have mount the ELK's M1ZTS as is.

Anyway at the moment until I can get the temperatures to be the trigger in rules I have a number red headed step child with pimples ;)

Any chance RP2 has this enabled??

Would there be any interest in a wireless temperature sensor that would work into the ELK M1XRF RF receiver?

You could have up to (16 minus the number of keypads) temperature sensors.

I guess that would depend on the design (ie how it looks) and price. Wireless would be a nice feature, especially if there is an outdoor version (or how about something with a probe for pool temps, etc like the wired version).

Hi Spanky,

Wireless TZS would give you some nice flexibility. The appearance is also important as I suspect the number of temp sensors ELK would have sold is likely to be directly proportional to the current models appearance. Not having a go David but it is pretty ordinary which is why I went to the trouble of modifying the M1TZS as pictured.

I don't think the 16 minus the number of keypads is likely to be an issue in 99.9% of typical installations. I would have thought "a typical" installation in likely to have 4-5 keypads max (I have 2) and temp sensors 6-8 max (I have 4). Having the flexibility of having a good looking wireless TZS that can go anyway inside and outside would be very attractive to many including myself. I can think of 3 locations I would like to monitor temperatures that I have not wired to and virtually impossible to now.

I agree with sic0048 what would neat is having the ability to have a wired probe that could plug into the wireless TZS. Getting pool temperatures into the M1 would be nice so solar heaters can be controlled, I have my solar heater controlled by my M1 only I have to either manually control it or time control it virtually setting it on a daily basis which is tiresome.

Another neat application for a wireless TZS with a wire probe is monitoring fridge/freezers especially when you go away.

Just a thought you could extend in the design to have the flexibility include a wired water sensor so the unit could have two personalities, making it more flexibility.

A wireless Temp. sensor would be great!, especially for a retrofit situation. One of the big limitations now (besides the appearance) is that they have to be directly connected to zones 1-16 on the controller.
