UPStart is not working...

I hope someone here will be able to tell me what i'm doing wrong and guide me in the right direction. I installed one HAI dimmer for testing purpose. It works fine. Next installed UPStart and connected PIM to computer using HAI 36A05-1 adapter. UPStart detects the serial port and connects without a problem. I put the dimmer in setup mode and tried to add it to UPStart but it doesn't find it. I tried to run singal & noise meter on UPStart but it shows no signal or noise level. My first thought was may be it's not working because I didnt install HAI phase coupler. But it still doesnt work after I added phase coupler per HAI instruction. So now i dont know what to do next. Please someone tell me what i'm missing here.

Did you properly configure the network number and password so they match in both the HAI and UPStart?

Or did you just install the switch electrically so it is operating a light but still using the default settings?

You can also try "Network Discovery" under the "Network" menu item.
This will send ping commands out on the lines and find out what UPB units are connected.
Those units weill report which network number they are connected to.

To answer your questions:
Yes i have tried creating network number and password without success.
Yes, i just installed the switch eletrically and it is using default settings. I can put it in setup mode but UPStart does not detect it at all.

I have tried Network Discovery but no result. It shows no unit found.

My first biggest problem or question is that why "Singal & Noise Meters" under Tools does not show any signal at all????? it shows as connected "Online" but no signal at all? If there is no signal obviousely it is not going to detect any unit at all, right?

Thanks for your help!.

You may (if you can) try removing the switch, connecting a power cord to it (safely, with wire nuts, etc.) and connecting it to the same outlet that the PIM is connected too. Then you can eliminate any wiring issues. If the PIM/Upstart still can't find the switch, one of your devices may be faulty.

I have an 8 button switch I use for testing and programming with a power cord attached. It's a great tool to have around.

You won't see any signal unless UPB commands are being transmitted.

You can reset the PIM to eliminate it as the cause.
There is a Communications Test function too.
If the PIM is buzzing when sending commands and it is talking to the computer, it is probably working.
Are you using a real RS232 port or a USB to RS232 converter cable?
I have two USB to RS232 cables. One works perfectly with the PIM, the other does not.

I'd try samgreco's suggestion.
I do this to test and preprogram switches before installation.
Use a three wire plug and cord and cap off all unconnected wires, especially the brown output wire.
I've had two switches that operated fine locally but did not communicate properly over the UPB net.

I had issues with the SA USB PIM trying to utilize it over a Digi USB Anywhere box. Directly connecting it to a PC (or laptop) worked fine.

I have had no issues with the serial PIM's although my first HAI UPB Serial PIM was defective and has worked fine since replacing it a couple of years ago. (IE worked fine at receiving UPB but didn't work at all transmitting UPB - and initially I thought it was me).

So it could be a defective UPB PIM that's causing your grief.

Thanks everyone!! I was able to solve the issue. What i did to reslove it is that I reset PIM back to factory setting per HAI instruction, by default PIM is in Pulse mode and UPStart can only communicate with it in this mode only.

And also changed UPStart to "Pulse Mode" under Tools -> Select -> Settings.
