Wall mount Android tablet interest

How much interest is there in tablets for this purpose? I'm working with a mfg to bring in some flush mount tablets. Specs would be the below. Unless there is enough interest they would all be white. I'll try to get some pictures posted soon.

Model 1:
7" capacitive multi touch
Android 4.0.3
10/100
POE (802.3af)
Front USB
Side micro SD slot
512mb/4gb ram
2 front speakers
$175 + shipping (I think I can get them around this price)

Model 2:
1.2ghz cpu
Capactivity screen multi touch
Android 4.0.3
Front camera
Side micro SD slot
512mb/4gb ram
2 front speakers
10/100 Network
POE (802.3 af)
$200 - $225 + shipping (I think!)

I'm waiting for my production units to come in so that I can start testing them. Need to make sure that full market/play works and if root is possible (not necessarily required). I'll know more in the next 2 weeks, but looking to bring in a bunch within the next month if there is enough interest. For those that dont have a POE switch I'll see about getting some POE injectors

Here are some quick pictures of the 9" screen & the mounting.

Yeah, I think some work needs to be done software wise, I have an android tablet and it does not work well as an HA platform kiosk. It needs to be able to boot into an app directly, and the build needs to kill the service in ICS that runs the software buttons. Some of the custom builds do kill the ICS service or have that as an option, but I havent' found a way to launch an app at startup.

The 7" has a normal home button, still waiting to find out about the 9".

The HS one is very similar but I didn't like the one they came out with. They lock it to their app only and it's resistive touch. I will be getting one of each for my house and figured I could but some more, add $5 to each one and sell to anyone else that wanted one.

There are apps to start an app on startup. I do that currently with my Kindle Fire already but that device does not like to be plugged in all the time to power.

I like the clam shell approach. My first ever in wall home wintel touchscreen used one from an automotive headrest device configuration. It worked well.

I have both resistive and capacitance touch screens. They do have their pros and cons. I'm still in the wintel world of touchscreens (HAI and Homeseer).

I guess in one way the "closed" propietary (Homeseer) talking only to the mothership approach works better for me than a generic open Android based always chatting to the internet more a regular tablet than wall mounted HA touchscreen; but then again you can only achieve what you want making it more HA multipurpose functional.

I do today though make my wintel touch screens interact with external commands from the mothership and local area (PIRs).

Remote mothership commands aside from displaying interactive buttons and graphics; I run screen savers, dim and brighten the screen, reboot and run external programs from the mothership in set reoccurring events relating to the hardware itself.

Ideally though you want to offer the option of remote controlling the device, hardware buttons and having the device become a touchscreen interface to the mothership; two way communications is great. This will take your product from a generically mounted in wall tablet with an Android OS to a more functional semi propietary general do all HA in wall touch screen product. You can also offer a tabletop mounting stand for those folks that prefer that feature still keeping it as an HA only tabletop touchscreen device.

Not to derail this thread, but what problems have you had leaving your Kindle Fire connected to power? I don't have that problem with mine & am planning to use it for HA, but if mine's a fluke that might derail my plans...

It's possible it is just my setup, but have tried multiple things with the same results.

Tried 2 different ethernet to usb adaptors and connecting to the fire. Eventually it just runs the battery down, even though it says it is charging. I think it just uses more then it takes in. I have mine set to never sleep. Even using their charger/cable without the ethernet to usb this happens. If you want PM me for more info.

Aah, that probably explains it then - power issues. I've been using mine with a 3rd party no name 120vac-usb adapter. Could provide more amperage than the stocker. I'm not wall mounting mine (yet.)
Thanks for the info.

Target Home Launcher on the market is free and allows any app to become a launcher which fixes the one issue. Basically forces you into one application. But then you still have the lack of a hard button and even with a hard button and an ICS device it's most likely setup as a 'back' button and will not work as a power button. Even hacking the keymap file on a rooted device can't override this unless you adjust wakelocks and prevent deep sleep and allow wake_drop on button press, etc.. It's just a bunch of B.S.

I really wonder why Android went this way. Why take something with limited screen size and force the screens smaller by using up the real estate with buttons?

Just confirmed with the factory that both versions will have a power button. The bad news right now is that I wont be able to get my samples until the end of the month due to screen shortages.

I might end up holding off though now since the reports are starting to come out about the ipad mini's. If those come out at the price everyone thinks they will I know there will be in wall mounting brackets for them not long after. While I can't stand IOS or apple I might have to concede on this one.

I might be interested in your model 2. What is its screen size? Can we only buy them as a group purchase or in the near term? I'm very interested in a supplier of a quality product that natively supports POE for wall mounting just like your doing. What can you tell us about this supplier?

My purchase needs are closer to a 9 month time frame, which is a full lifetime in this space.

BTW, I found a couple of cool apps to hide the bottom status bar in ICS. Both cost money, Hide Bar works and will allow you to hide at startup. It's a little quirky and takes about a min to hide the bar on my gTablet. The other that is all over the web is Gesture Control. It has an option to hide the status bar at startup but that feature costs also, not available in the free version.
