Usually the strings or threads aren't for cable construction or support, it's to provide a rip cord to remove the jacket easier.

Yes - but supposedly (according to some specs I've seen) either those are strengthened up or in one way or another additional strength is added to provide some support for the vertical runs as well to lessen some of the stress on the wire. Although, I admit I've never noticed much difference.

I've always suspected that plenum rated jackets were the same as, or similar to, other jackets, but the manufacturer paid for the rating testing on the plenum. And the testing is expensive.

Same thing with 'fire rated' products.

And no, I personally try to follow code.
