Which speaker for Elk M1 keypad?

I am putting together an Elk M1 Gold security/automation system and would like to place speakers behind the keypads. I will be using the M1KP2 keypads with the M1BBK2 recess mount back boxes. I need to know what speakers to order (I will have two keypads) that will mount in the cutouts provided on the back boxes and cannot locate the part number on the website or catalog. Help?

As mustangcoupe indicated, those speakers are the right ones; they are inexpensive and very low ohms so you can run a whole bunch of them if you want. They're sorta plastic-welded to the faceplate, so you just break it off - and the mounting holes hook right up.

Of course, they work best in the flush-mount box which is sold separately, but makes for a much cleaner look... I have 3 in my house.

Just remember to wire accordingly; though we've heard of people successfully using the unused pairs off the cat5, but I personally ran something better - I did 18/2 though I'm sure I could've used lighter gauge.

I personally love it - when you're working at a keypad, your feedback comes from the point where you're working; not from a speaker in some central spot across the house. If you use keypads all over like I do, you get very balanced audio throughout the home.

Ok, ToddB, I know electronics is not first nature to you so I need to call you out here B) the resistance is much higher then normal speakers 32 ohms vs 8 ohms of a conventional speaker. Which means you can parallel many more before getting into any trouble with being too low on the M1. for resistance the values add in reciprocal when connected in parallel... ex. 1/R = 1/R1 + 1/R2 + 1/R3 = 1/1K + 1/2.2K + 1/3.9K = 1/584.5, therefore R = 584.5 ohms

but I digress, back to your speaker discussion... :)

Been working LOOOONG hours this week, so I haven't been able to check this thread. I kinda suspected that's what you did to get the speaker, but wasn't sure. Thanks for the info!

LOL MC! I used to know this stuff inside and out - but as I get older and the kid and job take their toll on me, I think the gray is leaching into my brain (there's no color left in my hair to lose so it's going inward). If I remember correctly, you can run up to 8 speakers in parallel dropping the ohms down to 4 and being safe for short bursts (or is it series?)...

When in doubt, I always go back to the calculators - I just can't memorize all this stuff...

Thanks for the link!

I finally bought a house and am interested in adding an ELKM1G (mainly since it can interface with my Premise home automation server very easily).

Does everyone prefer the M1KP2 over the M1KP? It looks like the main difference is the lack of a speaker, but the link below solves that problem.

I haven't seen either in person, but looking online, I think the KP2 looks better. I haven't ordered my M1G yet, so the keypad will dictate which kit I order.
