X10 is at it again!

Let's see, 2 fridge doors, doggie door in and out, freezer door, 3 bathroom doors, 3 toilet seat up/down, 3 toilet lid up/down...

You guys really crack me up at times!!!!! hahahha!

"Good morning Huggy, it's now 4:30 am. I am waking you earlier than planned so you may go put the toilet seat down before your wife gets up."

"And by the way, someone opened the cupboard door at 3:32 am where the cookes are kept."

LOL!!!!!!

A simple spring, solenoid- or servo-based latch, and maybe some cushioning foam (or another spring) will take care of that. The spring is on the tank. When the seat is up, it compresses the spring. A latch holds the seat in place in this position. Release the latch (hence the solenoid or servo) and the seat is repositioned appropriately. The foam or other spring is on the bottom of the seat (or the rim of the bowl?) to cushion the return.

Of course, if you want to get fancy, a damped, geared arrangement (like the kind used to make doors on electronic equipment open slowly) would be cool. The seat slowly lowers itself gently into position when released.

Just add the appropriate event in HomeSeer (or other) to return the seat to the down position.

I'd probably add a motion sensor/timer arrangement. And a sensor to detect when the seat is up (the DS10, for example). If the seat is up for a specified amount of time and no motion is detected, then the seat is released and resumes the lowered position.

A proximity sensor would probably be better than motion. For example, an infrared beam that is broken while the toilet is in use (blocked by a standing user, say).

Another option would to simply use an electric sylenoid, similar to the ones in card doors for the locks, on the back of the tank. Supply 12v and you could certainly rest assured that it would close it!

I guess if you are automating the bathroom, you may as well Incpoporate This. Of course the WAF "scale" (if you go to the link you will get the REALLY BAD punn here) would probably lose a few points :)

My house woke me up very early around 4am because it insisted to let us know there was a weather alert, and it also announced really loud that I opened the garage door while my wife was still asleep, so John, those things do happen and aren't funny :)

(Somehow the X10 signal to turn off the speakers never made it , so they were on all night)

Hehe, this is why I use my Ocelot and Relay 8 output module to do critical tasks such as this! :)

I see only two problems with your theory/assumptions above:

I am now SINGLE - I don't care about the toilet seats and lids! YAHOO!!!

It was me into the cookies at 3:32am, and 4:12am, and again at 5:17am...

smee, johnwpb, if you have women in your lives, you WILL NOT mess with creating a snapping toilet seat!! Fair warning!

LOL !!

Huggy! You actually had me laughing out loud here! Shew.....

I was just pictureing the thing trying to, as you put it, "snap shut" while it was in use! hahhhahahah

No problem here either, absolutely no drama here about the seat being left up. Makes you wonder, if it was left down and you guys were to leave a...errr... few drops, could you complain "Well! SOMEONE forgot to put the toilet seat back up again!!!" hehe

I believe the second rule applies. ;)

We always hear "the rules" from the female side.
Now here are the rules from the male side.
These are our rules:

Breasts are for looking at and that is why we do it. Don't try to change that

Learn to work the toilet seat. You're a big girl. If it's up, put it down. We need it up, you need it down. You don't hear us complaining about you leaving it down.

Thank you for reading this; Yes, I know, I have to sleep on the couch tonight, but did you know men really don't mind that, it's like camping.

That's a great post, unfortunately I can not comment in case my wife is watching this thread ;)
