Apologies and another question

If the XRFTW senses RF interference it will be displayed on the keypad as "RF Jam Detected". The XRFTW states that this feature is required for UL installations; this can be disabled via Globals. I don't recall what specific Global it is, but it's listed in RP under the G29-G42 tab, at the very bottom - "UL Wireless Jam Detect"
Thanks for that, I just turned it on. How do they define wireless jam? What exactly does it detect?

Miike.

Those are both great questions :)

My suspicion is that it detects and defines a jam as anything that it senses in that freq. range that is not an Elk 2-way sensor. I obviously could be wrong.

It'll be interesting to see what if anything turns up. I hope that it beeps when it displays on teh keypad or I'll probably miss it.

Jam is different than the receiver being slightly overpowered by RF signals. All the systems I've recently worked on, jam is only reported when the receiver is completely overpowered with signal, not a partial or occasional flooding.

Regarding crimp wire splices, I have had good luck with these on IP wiring

I have used several to splice cat5e/cat6 when wiring the five set top boxes and a few IP outlets in my house  and have had no problems. I have also used them to splice the cat6 that delivers data to the garage.
Not acceptable for any category cabling. Telco or general splicing, UR's and UY's are fine, but anything like TCP/IP is a no-no. You'd be better off using a jack/RJ combo or butt 2 jacks together (although in theory it does double the amount of untwist and can be pinged with a pentascanner).s

Usually it's not too noticeable if the bandwidth is slight, but if you have intensive bandwidth, it'll show it's head.

I've been streaming Uverse audio video at 1080p for a few years between the building and have these splices in two spots on the cat6 cableand everything has been fine. I believe that it is about 5 - 10 mbs.

Mike.

Via a STB or to another device?

I don't believe the STB's are that bandwidth intensive from what I've seen. 5-10 mbs isn't that much on a 10/100 network.

I'm a firm believer of "if it aint broke don't fix it".

Hey DEL my system has been quiet with no auto restarts since I removed the garage keyboard on Monday morning. All of the rules have been runningn and I have a few UPB lights controlled bythe Elk. I think that I may finally be in pretty good shape here.

I've had the RF Jam detection turned on for a few days and have had no message or beep at the keypad and no log entries. The system has been running perfectly since I removed the garage keypad on Monday morning five days ago.

Wow, that's awesome! Glad you figured it out!

Thanks but I won't be convinced that the system is stable until I replace the keypad and maybe even re-install the M1TWA. I'll be moving forward slowly and carefully.

Mike.

I wouldn't worry about the jam detection making a peep on the system....in installing the Honeywell Vista panels for almost 20 years and having that option for about 10-15, 99.9% of the systems out there never report any sort of RF issue.

The one or two times I've seen this, the house was literally backed up to a 50 kW radio antenna that was flooding the spectrum (tumor anyone?).
