Common TTS phrases

I am researching some TTS engines, and would like to know what are some of your most common TTS (text-to-speech) phrases. I'm not looking for anything special, I just want to make sure I test the TTS engine as much as I can. Some phrases I use on a regular basis:
  • Garage door has been opened!
  • Garage door has been closed!
  • Driveway motion has been detected!
  • New mail has arrived!
  • An internet outage has been detected!
  • Good Morning, it's X degrees outside ...
  • Good night!

"Alarm has been [mode: Armed Away, Armed Stay, Armed Night, Disarmed]."

I use Kate and like her. Wife is not too thrilled...doesn't like it when Kate talks dirty to her.

Kate sounds pretty natural.

Dan,

Similiar here. Many times questioned.

- Alarm status off greeting in the house is personal relating to whom shut off the alarm. (historically have added house status, temperature, messages etc)
- hourly chimes which include the outside and inside temperatures (brother in law asked why?)
- certain outdoor motion zones (side parts of house - doors or windows)
- mail delivery
- doorbell (keep flipping from basic chimes to chimes and TTS)
- CNN / BBC screen scrape "hot" news alerts
- weather alerts (again on and off again with TTS)
- garage TTS as above and also reading the RFID tag of the vehicle and announcing which vehicle is approaching or leaving
- loss of my time server (using one box, GPS for internal time NTP)

Some folks I recall get a bit carried away with a TTS syopsis of past motion activities in their house using combinations of sensors. (a bit paranoid to

When first using TTS in the 1980's I had speech associated with every zone (even doors and windows) mostly because of my kids (infants at the time). It was only one voice font. It was a real voice font versus the early 80's machine like TTS voice font. Today I have a "library" of various speech fonts (8 or more I believe) but have stuck with one over the last 10 years. (Neospeech Kate). Some folks have the TTS voices talk to each. Many times when traveling I would "text" message TTS to the house to just say hi to my wife. I tried over the years using VR but lost the "training" VR patience after a bit. But I do see in the future of HA a totally interactive touch screen with TTS/VR and even HA virtual entity interaction.

Sometimes I use the TTS announcements as a guage on how much work the HA server is doing (it used to be if it was working very hard like in the days of 500Mhz / 512mb of memory PC's and using the first AT&T voice fonts - which were already memory/utilization hogs).

I use TTS to announce when any door or window is opened. For most doors, if this is done repeatedly it won't announce it a second time until a cooling off period has passed. For my doors leading to my pool, it announces it every time because that is my "alarm" which is is required by code. I also use TTS to warn when a door or gate has been open for a set period of time. That is very handy. I also use it for most of what others are using it for.

To cut down a bit on the annoyance, I don't announce door or window openings in the speakers nearest that door or window. So if you come in the front door, it doesn't say it on the front door speaker.

I'll try to generate some samples soon, so you can check it out for yourself, but the TTS engine is VERY lightweight, and I think this is the best quality I have played with so far (I own both Neospeech and AT&T voices).

My favorite (most pleasant) voice is Acapela Heather. (sounds like an angel to me - wife didn't like her though - think she was "jealous").

Check out Laura and Tracy while you are there.

Acapela TTS

In addition to time, weather, garage, etc - caller id - like 'Telephone call from... and either name (comes out funny sometimes) or number'

If this is the same Heather I played with years ago, then yes, she is one of the best voices out there. But last I checked, you could not buy this voice, did you find a way?

The washer/dryer has finished

There is someone at the front/back door

... is ariving home.

Tonight is garbage night

Call from ....

Alarm system armed/disarmed

Whenever a thermostat is adjusted (manually or by program) "Kitchen Furnace now set to xx degrees" (or middle furnace or south furnace, etc.)

I also use:

"Well pump has operated x times today"
"Kitchen furnace has operated x times today. Kitchen furnace runtime is X hours and y minutes so far today"
"Basement lights have been left on"
"Containment breach detected"
"Birthday today, remember birthday call!"

Funny Steve.

I use TTS for CID (think it was mentioned before). Application though does custom CID announcements depending on caller or just plain old name and number.
