ELK Lost Comm

Hi all,

I setup my ELK on the bench about 1.5 months ago. Then my house got delayed and i boxed it up.

Now that i plugged it back in the keypads are not wanting to communicate (Lost Comm) but they do show the ELK serial and have their lights on.

The ELK status light on the main control is flashing about 1hz and i can't find where in the manual what that means.

After i power on i hear the relays click like normal, then the speaker says input expander 2 and 3 missing and some random window violated. I didn't think i had a input expanded 3.

I am also having trouble connecting to the unit via serial. Although i have 5 serial ports on my PC i don't recall which one is COMM3, but i've tried them all and it says 'Connecting - Detecting Serial Port Setting' for all then after a while it says 'System did not respond'.

I know which keypay is Keypad 1, i unplugger everything else from the DBH and am positive i have the DBH hooked up correctly.

Any suggestions?

Re enroll all the devices using the keypad: ELK Key, 9, installer code(172839 default), 1, right arrow. The display will show all devices enrolled after a few seconds. May sure they all enroll.

The 1 hertz blink on the M1 is normal operation.

Make sure each keypad has a different address and each expander has a different address on the address switches starting at address 2. If you change any expander address, cycle power on the control and re enroll the devices as shown above.

Go to the hardware device manager and see what serial ports are present on your computer. Try them in the serial port number in ELKRP. Are you using a USB to serial device or serial port on the PC?

Hi Spanky,

I found the right serial port and can connect using ELKRP.

When i do enroll from ELK RP it is saying Keypad 1 missing or not working properly.

On the keypad itself the ELK key will give a beep sometimes, but it will not go into the menu.

I have the keypad i know is #1 connected.

When i unpacked my ELK i think the wire connecting to the databus hit the battery leads and arched/shorted. Could i possibly have blow up the databus or something? How would i check?

I hooked the KP2 up direct to the databus (bypassing the DBH) and put the termination jumper on it...still no joy...ELKRP still says its missing.

Other than databus issue the control seems to be working ok.

By the way when i hook up the DBH to the databus and then plug in my expanders they all say 'No enrolled' eventhough they are. If i did blow up the databus i woudl expect them to say 'No Comm'.

It is also interesting that the ELK keypads have power but no comm, but upon startup they do show the M1 serial number, or is this perhaps stored locally on the keypad memory or something?

If you shorted +12V to the RS485 data bus could be your problem. The data bus is pretty robust, but the 3.3 Volt data lines could be damaged from a 12 V short.

The serial number shown on the keypad is the serial number of the last M1 control that sucessfully connected to it. If the data bus is dead, the keypad shows what was stored in the keypad memory.
