How to talk over the speaks via phone w/ ELK

Is there a way to do this without the listen-in interface hooked up? I have one, but I'm thinking about selling it because it doesn't suit my original purpose.

It seems like it *should* be possible to dial in, hit some buttons, and be able to do an "announcement" over the speakers in the house.

I don't have an answer for you, but if you have the ELK-M1TWA, I might be interested in purchasing it.

On second thought, I'm not sure the ELK can do this without the listen in device. In reality, without the listen in device, I suspect the ELK only plays the rgular set of pre-recorded messages. I think the listen in device is really designed to do exactly what you want. It obviously listens in, but it also allows a caller to speak through the system as well.

Pick up a house phone, dial *0*, wait for the "Please enter security code" message to announce over the speakers. Now anything you say into the phone will be sent over the Elk's speakers.

Awesome, thanks! My wife is gonna be pissed when I say "7 days" in a raspy/whisper voice over it.

Does that only work through a house phone? I'm dialing into the unit remotely, and when I type *0*, it disconnects me after a couple of seconds.

From my experience, yes. Why do you want to page remotely? You can always hook up your answering machine speaker to the paging input on your audio system, etc if someone at the house cannot answer the phone.

I am assuming you know that the listen-in interface will activate the audio monitor? You can then listen and speak through the house's speakers.

From the M1 Manual Appendix D:

2. Two way may also be initiated by calling in using the Telephone Remote Control, and pressing 7 - Audio Monitor

TONE COMMANDS
* 55 * BEGIN LISTEN-IN Used by Operator to begin a listen-in session.
1 TALK Talk through all speakers connected to Output 1.
2 LISTEN All 3 microphone zones are enabled initially. Use key 4 to change mics.
3 SENSITIVITY INCREASE Raise the microphone gain.
4 MICROPHONE SELECT 4+0 Selects ALL microphones, 4+1 Mic1 zone, 4+2 Mic2 zone, 4+3 Mic3 zone
5 [future use]
6 SENSITIVITY DECREASE Lowers the microphone gain.
7 EXTEND TIME for 3 minutes
8 - 8 TERMINATE SESSION and enable 1 ring callback answer for selected time.
9 - 9 TERMINATE SESSION without enabling callback answer mode.
0 [future use]
* CANCEL last key-press (undo )
# [future use]

I agree, I still think the listen in device is the only way to give you the results you are looking for. Since you already have one, why not hook it up. Obviously if the ELK could do it internally, I guess you could sell it and make back some $$, but I think you are better served by using it for your talk back scenerio.

That's a neat trick. So is there any way to do it without the "Please enter security code" message? I'd like to be able to page the house, but the security code message will be annoying.

Annoying, perhaps. But it is better than having random people talking throughout your house because someone accidentally hit "0" while talking on the phone. :)

Nice idea! From a remote telephone be able to use "*0*" (star, zero, star) to page into the house after you enter the access code.

Paging into the house before entering the access code would let irate neighbors give you a piece of their mind.

Two separate issues. From an ouside telephone, of course you would want to enter a security code. From an inside telephone, you can already page without entering a security code. I understand the security code prompt is there so you can enter the Menu. Why not have a separate paging mode by entering something like *1*?
