iTunes as Whole Home audio solution

I have been working on budget solutions for whole home audio applications in my home.

What does everyone think of using iTunes as a central media hub for music?

Currently I have iTunes on a Windows Home Server being controlled by the local console and by a roving iPod touch. This feeds a HAI Hi Fi whoile home solution which the Touch controls as well.

Anyone have any suggestions for improvements in this type of system?

I use the iTunes plugin with HomeSeer for my whole house music system and both me and the wife love it. It pauses when HomeSeer speaks and I control it via HSTouch from a touch screen in my kitchen. I want another touch screen device for Christmas so I can have one in the TV room as well. So I would agree that iTunes is an excellent fit for whole house audio.

I would base around J River MediaCenter and not iTunes as it has more growth capability for multizone / multipc and a much better database and API.

Well like DavidL said.... if you ever think you might want multizones then switch to JRMC but if not then it won't matter.

Does anybody have experience with a Nuvo Musicport? It looks promising..but i haven't seen much reports on it...

Will Jriver operate from the same directory as I tunes, or do we need to replicate all the mp3's into another directory?

you can run both j river and itunes off of same music collection.

You can share the mp3 files. Sharing metadata gets more complicated. I find it's best to do any editing of track info and the like from within JRMC. Get it done first in JRMC and then import to iTunes. Just make sure you've got iTunes configured not to move tracks into iTunes when importing. Works reasonably well.
